I think it has to do with how much shit needs to be done when it comes to scanlating? It can also be pretty hard depending on the series, and is basically hard in general. Stress, maybe? I can understand if I was the guy translating Medaka Box one of the WORDS WORDS WORDS chapter because that shit IS time consuming. But H-manga? Fuck no. Napata doujins aren't that complex.

While there is probably some backstory to this (and it sounds like there is) it's hard to feel sympathy like what fuke is asking. A poor, amplified example I can think of is maybe like some city cops are cracking ring after ring of drug lords then as they're about to go for the big guys the FBI steps in and takes care of it.

Except 90% of the books people decide to pick up for translation are light as fuck on actual content and context. They're short, plot-what-plot fuck stories where if you have seen one, you'll have seen them all. No complicated dialogue. No gripping characterization. The occassional complicated Jukugo or archaic Kanji, but by and large this shit is easier to read than Yotsuba. Really, the fuck is this guy's problem?

Nowadays, you need a dictionary, a laptop, a connection, the ability to unzip rars, and at bare minimum, 2 hours in MSpaint. And there aren't scant-few of these types. There are hundreds. One translator falls, two take his place. That's the face of this hobby, now.

Such a scene makes it ludicrious to even call something "DIBS!". It's pathetic. If one wants genuine recognition for picking up another language, go barter with publishers to do books for 4 cents a page or some shit. And your name STILL won't matter.

Look up L4K or Life4Kaoru + FUKE and note the results. Please do your research before making erroneous claims like that. We've done stuff with Team Vanilla and that's about the extent of it. That does not mean we know "everyone in the Chinese Porn Scantalation Scene."

From our end, it's regrettable what happened, but sometimes shit happens and you've just got to deal with it. We've had plenty of projects where we purchased raws and had another group beat us to the punch. And we moved on. I hold a certain amount of respect for FUKE and many of the translations he's done, but what's done is done. Personally, I had no knowledge of him being "the Napata guy": I like Napata, my translator likes Napata, the typesetter likes Napata, and when the opportunity came to do some of his works, well, it's a first-come first-serve basis, and we happened to be quicker on the draw.

That's all I care to say about this whole thing, and I don't care to get into a flame war.

This rests upon the assumption that scanlations are hurting the sales of the artists. Maybe you could make the case for the raws but this is certainly not the case for the translations.

These mangaka wouldn't be known outside of Japan if it weren't for people translating their works.

That's a pretty damn sweeping generalization that I wouldn't make. It's entirely dependent on what exactly you're translating. Manga aimed at teens for example is probably always going to be easier to do than H-manga due to furigana etc.

Also, from a personal experience I can also say that some authors fucking love having WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS in their stuff - like where a 30-page regular manga has about ~200 lines of dialogue per chapter on average, a 30-page H-manga by a certain author might have six fucking hundred.

It's primarily because people don't tend to fathom the sheer extent of the actual work required to translate the average (or even shorter) VN.

It's a lot different from translating single chapters, volumes, or individual stories of manga.
Heck, even within the scene of manga, the ones who regurarly translate complete trades of manga is a lot rarer.

Even then though, a complete trade is usually a whole lot less work than that of a game.
So the type of translator to actually have the skills required, and the persistence to actually carry the work through to completion, is what holds the translation scene behind.

Sometimes, trying hard to keep it close to original will make the people scratch their head in confusion. Verbosity isn't always cool.

Today's translation scene culture has changed a lot from how it used to be. It's based upon mass-quantity consumption now instead of artisan-type production with fans praising the translator/editor. Mass consumers aren't like fans. They are more about themselves getting enjoyment and don't care about anything or anyone else. Is that good? No, not if you like the fandom aspects. But almost all of the manga readers are not fans but instead just consumers. You can see in the responses that they don't care about fannish concerns; as soon as something gets in their way, they get angry even at the translator providing the free material. Gratitude is for the dogs when it comes to the average consumer. You also have "fans from hell" as seen from some of the posts in this thread.

One of the most popular iDOLM@STER doujins at the prior Comiket 83 sold over $200,000 worth for a single title. It's line of customers set a record for length at over 10,000 customers. Of course, not all those customers were in line at once. That's the number of customers that went thru the queue process for the entire convention.

Conversely, FUKE does it for free. But consumers don't have any respect for free as they have shown in this thread. I seem people claiming to support translators, but it's not genuine because they then attack the translator the very next instant. That is not support because support includes loyalty despite problems. That's why they are consumers and not real fans (even if they claim to be fans by claiming to support the translator).

The /a/nonymous translator is calling it quits for translation too. The quitting announcement occurred somewhat soon after he was attacked by a bunch of deliberately ungrateful people (like the attacks in this thread). /a/nonymous does translations for everything from pokemon to Arpeggio of Blue Steel. He will be winding down and shedding projects slowly though rather than suddenly abandoning all projects. The last 2 projects left to be dropped include Arpeggio of Blue Steel, so hopefully someone will take up translation of this item. /a/nonymous imported the manga at his expense, scanned, leveled, redrew, and edited as needed. Whoever takes Arpeggio will need to import their own because there is no regular raws supplier.

All good things come to an end. I knew this, so I wanted my adventure in scanlation to come to a graceful end by slowly parting with every series I translate. However, other aspects of my life have accelerated at a faster pace than I imagined, so I simply can't translate at the same pace, or even half or one-fourth the speed.

When I realized this months ago, I thought that I could just continue at this slow pace, if everyone would let me. However, I started to notice that the fact that I'm behind on translations makes me anxious (I should add that no commenter is at fault here; it's all stress that I give myself). Moreover, I've suffered from several bouts of depression during the last two months from my stressful (but fun) new life. I've been advised to remove sources of stress and anxiety, so here we are.

Looking over the timing, and reading the site, it seems that the negativeness was the last straw. I remember from way way way back that there was some negative comments on 4chan from other "down with translators!" type threads especially that one where a bunch of 4channers piled up on that supplier of raws to LWB. That was both entertaining and sad to see as some raws cost $300 to $400 to get. Sure, it's his "fault" for buying them at that price, but otherwise the raws would not be available for translation.

Well, I won't be scanning for you! As far as I know, there are only 2 who pick up the anthology (besides /a/nonymous). Since I'm not scanning and /a/nonymous will stop soon, Arpeggio will dry up. The magazine version is not as good as the tank because Ark seems to keep on working, so the tank is the best source. I don't buy the tank because I like and want all the other pages in the magazine. I'd be depressed serving all the jerks, so no thanks to that.

when it comes to non-h series it somewhat matters since sometimes serializations can lie stagnant or completely die off due to lack of translation.
In hentai, material tends to be more one-off in nature and less serialized, so if someone up and quits it doesn't have a humongous impact.

Personally, I'm not all that bothered since hentai is hentai in my book, and most of it is so devoid of plot it's quite easy to get off to even untranslated doujinshi.
