I'm wondering a bit about where the whole thing is going. Vampires? Dinosaurs? RINGWRAITHS? Even if it looks like he's running out of ideas, at least it is keeping the story interesting. The fights seem to be more about higlighting characters and emotions than battles (despite the DBZ feel at some points). The tension and desparation are always there, so it keeps the reader interested in what's going to happen next. The pacing may be off at points, the plot a bit convoluted at points, but it's all serving to tell the story of Kurono and his companions. If you expect everything you read, watch, or hear to be an inspriational masterpiece, you'll just be disapointed. I think Gantz is trying to use some cool ideas (fighting dinos and ringwraits? sweeet!) to show the development of people in desparate situations. And it does that fairly well.
Compare with Berserk. Berserk has better character development, plot, art, style, pacing, ideas, originality, and themes, but Berserk is a real masterpiece. Gantz is enjoyable to read, and has just enough depth to be more than an excuse for sex and violence. It has it's merrits, and like all art, those merrits don't appeal to everybody. No need to read it if you don't like it. Meanwhile, the rest of us will have something enjoyable to read once in a while, and maybe just a little something to think about as a result.
