Do you know Dungeon, by Trondheim and Sfar (and many others) ? If not, I'd like to introduce one of my favorites series.
Dungeon is a heroic fantasy series. It a parody of the genre (the main hero is a duck…) but in the same time one of its best comic sagas. Real laught and adventures, what more do you need ? Yeah, a big universe to explore. You get that in Dungeon. In fact, it is not one series, it is various sub-series with linked and crossed stories taking places at different times : - Dungeon Zenith is the main series, at the golden age of the Dungeon (level 1 and following, the "level" indicates the time of the story) - Dungeon The Early Years tells how the Dungeon appeared (level -99, -98, etc) - Dungeon Twilight is about the end of the Dungeon (and the end of the world), levels 100, 101, ... - Dungeon Monstres are one shot stories focusing on one character, but with strong links with the other series (you need to read Monstres to understand some events of other series), taking place at any "level" (one comes back as far as level -400). - Dungeon Parade are just funny stories between level 1 and 2
Ok, so what's the story, and what's the Dungeon ? The Dungeon is just a company run by the Keeper (a greedy bird smoking pipe). It is a castle full of monsters (the company employees) where adventurers come in search of fortune and fame, ending invariably dead, leaving their money and fame with their bodies and luring more adventurers. A profitable bussiness. In Zenith, The main hero, Herbert the Duck, is a coward employee of the Dungeon without any fighting skill, and unbelievably he will end as the feared Dark Lord, possessing the Destiny Objects, and causing the end of the world (in Twilight). You also discover in the Early Years that the Keeper hasn't always been a greedy bastard and that he used to be a young idealist and the masked hero of his town (in love with the chief of the assassins guild).
Althought the story is great and you will spend hours making connections between characters and sub-series, there is more to Dungeon. It is about contrast between an big adventure story and the relaxed "hey bro" attitude of the characters; and between the continual humor and some serious themes that are tackled in the story.
The original series is in french (as I am), but it has been edited in english by NBM. But I suppose that euro comics aren't very spread in the US or other countries, so a lot of people could miss this king of great series. Hope you'll enjoy it ! BTW, I've seen there is a torrent with the whole collection hanging around on the internet.
