Anyone else see it? I loved it. It looks like it's not going to turn a profit, but I hope that doesn't discourage Disney from funding more Muppets projects in the future.
American cartoonist Bill Watterson, author of the worldwide cult series Calvin And Hobbes, won the top prize on Sunday for his craft at France's Angouleme world comic strip festival, organisers said. Watterson, 56, won the grand prix at the 41st edition of the festival, beating Japan's Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) and Britain's Alan Moore (Watchmen). He was not present to receive his prize.
Jail for Russian trio in gay murder
MOSCOW - A Russian court has handed down jail terms ranging from nine years to 12½ years to three men who murdered another they believed to be gay.
The men, all from the same village in Kamchatka in far eastern Russia, killed the man last May as they were convinced of his "non-traditional sexual orientation", prosecutors said in a statement yesterday.
The court heard that they lured the 29-year-old victim to a deserted part of the forest where he was stabbed multiple times in the chest, face and neck. They later placed him in his car and set it alight using petrol.
I have a friend who is an aspiring comic book artist and he is trying to get his book out there. He doesn't have a website but it working on it. His company is called Attack Comics and his book is called Star Unit. I'm trying to get word out there and any advice for him would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Musharraf says army backs him; treason claims a govt 'vendetta'
Supporters of slain Pakistani leader Benazir Bhutto rallying in Lahore on her death anniversary last Friday. The criminal cases that former ruler Pervez Musharraf faces include murder charges over her assassination.
ISLAMABAD- Pakistan's former military ruler Pervez Musharraf has denounced treason charges against him as a "vendetta", and said he had the backing of the country's powerful army. The 70-year-old told reporters the "whole army" was upset with the treason allegations, in his first comments to the international media since he was put under house arrest in April.
The treason claims are the latest and potentially most serious in a flurry of criminal cases he has faced since returning to Pakistan in March.
The case puts the government on a possible collision course with the army, which is seen as being reluctant to witness its former chief suffer the indignity of being tried by a civilian court.
"I would say the whole army is upset. I have led the army from the front," Musharraf told reporters yesterday. "I have no doubt with the feedback that I have received that the whole army is... totally with me on this issue."
The military, which has ruled Pakistan for more than half of its 66-year history and wields great influence, has not made any clear public comment on the case.
The treason charges relate to Musharraf's imposition of emergency rule in November 2007 and, if found guilty, he could face the death penalty or life imprisonment. The case hearing by a special tribunal will resume on Wednesday but Musharraf said he had not yet decided whether or not he would attend.
"The way this tribunal was formed, which involved the prime minister and the ex-chief justice, this itself smacks a little bit of a vendetta," he said.
His lawyers have dismissed the charges as an attempt by the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, whom Musharraf ousted in a coup in 1999, to settle old scores through the courts.
Musharraf returned to Pakistan to run in May's general election - won by Mr Sharif - but his homecoming proved disastrous.
He was barred from running for office almost immediately and then hit with a series of serious criminal allegations dating back to his time in power, which ended in 2008.
These include murder charges over the assassination in late 2007 of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, as well as the death of a rebel leader, a deadly military raid on a radical mosque and the detention of judges.
To add to his humiliation, he was placed under house arrest in April. He has now been granted bail but threats to his life mean he lives under heavy guard in his house on the edge of Islamabad.
Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who's the coolest princess of them all? Let rates these damsels-not-so-much-in-distress on their cool factor
ELSA AND ANNA
Frozen (2013)
Anna and Elsa are princesses born into the Arendelle royal family. As a child, elder sister Elsa discovers her ability to control ice and snow. Anna, who is warm and optimistic, lacks any ability, but makes up for it with her fearlessness and willingness to face up to every challenge.
MERIDA
Brave (2012)
Merida is a headstrong teenager who struggles to take control of her destiny. She has impressive athletic skills as both a master archer and swordfighter.
She unintentionally turns her mum and her triplet brothers into bears, but quickly takes charge and saves the day.
RAPUNZEL
Tangled (2010)
Although Rapunzel spends most of her life trapped in a tower, she is no weakling. She has a seemingly infinite amount of hair that can be used for various purposes - from lifting herself and others into the tower to tying people up.
She gets full marks because her golden hair is magical - it has a healing effect and can restore youth.
TIANA
The Princess and the Frog (2009)
Tiana is a motivated and hardworking woman who dreams of opening her own restaurant one day. She is a natural talent when it comes to the culinary arts.
She can cook very fast and whip up delicacies with few ingredients. She also shows relatively quick adaptibility when she was turned into a frog.
MULAN
Mulan (1998)
Mulan would be arguably be the bravest princess among the lot after taking her father's place and disguising herself as a man to fight in a war.
While other princesses have squirrels and little birds to help them, Mulan has a little dragon sidekick - albeit not a very strong one.
POCAHONTAS
Pocahontas (1995)
Pocahontas is a free-spirited and brave young woman who is one with Mother Nature. She is also acrobatic, quick on her feet, and knocks every rock, tree and creature in her forest home.
She always seeks the right path for herself and her tribe and believes that violence never solves anything. Impressive.
JASMINE
Aladdin (1992)
Jasmine is the only daughter of the sultan. She is sick of being a princess and longs for a life outside the palace. She is a fast learner and is quite agile as she can perform difficult feats such as pole vaulting.
Furthermore, she has a pet tiger, a genie for a friend and a magic carpet. How much more badass can she get?
BELLE
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Belle is a bookworm. She has read almost every book in her local library twice. She is also selfless, taking her father's place as a prisoner in the Beast's castle.
Held captive, she teaches him how to care for others and eventually falls in love with him after seeing his inner beauty. That is pretty honourable.
ARIEL
The Little Mermaid (1989)
Ariel is an adventurous and feisty mermaid with the voice of an angel. Longing to be human, she defies her father and make a deal with the sea witch, trading her melodic voice for a pair of human legs.
Despite being voiceless, Ariel still manages to charm the prince into falling in love with her in, like, two days? You rock, girl.
LEIA
Star Wars Original Trilogy (1977 - 1983)
Leia automatically became part of the Disney princess family when Disney acquired Lucasfilm last year. She is the youngest senator ever in the Galactic Empire and one of the most powerful and influential leaders of the rebellion. Like her brother Luke, she is also strong in the force.
AURORA
The Sleeping Beauty (1959)
Aurora, also known as Sleeping Beauty, has the gift of beauty and song. Cursed by the evil Maleficent to die on her 16th birthday, she has no significant abilities other than the classic Disney princesses' ability to break into song anywhere, anytime.
CINDERELLA
Cinderella (1950)
Cinderella is gentle and has an intelligent sense of humour which she keeps hidden from her cruel stepmother and stepsisters.
Although she can command small critters to help with her endless chores, she just sits passively while the prince searches for her. Meh.
SNOW WHITE
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
Snow White has the ability to communicate with animals and she cheers others up with her mouth-watering soups and pies. But falling so easily for her evil stepmother's trick and eating the poisoned red apple shows that she is more clueless than cool.
