To each his own and all but I found them horrible. During the lead-up to the release of the first film there was never any mention of a sequel. It was only AFTER it came out and blew up as big as Star Wars that they added on those two badly-written, style over substance cash grabs.

That's what steered me away from animatrix. I thought it was just more of the same, only as a cartoon.

It's a good demonstration of what was wrong with the Matrix as a whole. They could've had a really interesting philosophical story there, with members of both sides trying to seek peace and ultimately failing, possibly striking out on their own together while the rest of the humans and robots nuke each other into the dust. They also could've just had a massive, awesome war montage of multiple battles where the robots declare war of their own volition and the humans are slowly but surely crushed. But because they tried to do both action and philosophy and ultimately half-assed both, the result is just something of a mess.

I'd say its an analogue for progress and how war between the humans and machines stops progress for both sides.

There are some great shorts in The Animatrix but Second Renaissance is not one of them. Visually it's very nice but it's so heavy handed with its constant biblical allusions and pseudo-intellectual bullshit that it ruins whatever good elements were present.

But that's precisely why it's terrible. The Matrix, the original Matrix, gets a lot of mileage out of the Machines being completely evil. And while I suppose you can't just have black and white morality in a film that aspires to philosophical peaks, reversing course and making the HUMANS completely evil just makes everything nonsensical.

I just love documentary style stuff like this. Even if the story is heavy handed, it gives the setting a nice, rich history to settle the narrative into. I love it. I would pay good money for Ken Burns DVD set about fictional histories.

The Second Renaissance is very symbolic.

Many scenes don't really make sense from a realistic perspective (like shooting robots in the head execution style) and are pretty much there for shock value.

It's not meant to be a realistic depiction of what happened. A realistic depiction would probably have been pretty tame and generic.

But the actual subversion of Second Renaissance is that machines are evil. The machines had been winning the war for some time and yet they still decided the best way to go about it was to create machines lacking in sentience or sapience then send them out zerg style against human forces. They also decided to forget about efficient methods of warfare and have their troops dismember human soldiers or capture them for experimentation.

People point out problems with Second Renaissance seem to be missing the point. The entire short is a file from some version of the Zion archive, which means it has an obvious human bias toward the end. But the only way the humans could have access to this information at all is by acquiring it from the machine database, which is why there is an obvious machine bias toward the beginning. The entire film may have been machine propaganda. This is why there's a robot riding a horse in a burning desert and soldiers shooting androids in the head Vietnam style.

Not to go 2deep4u, but it's clear some of you don't get it.

We must merge biology and technology. Combine their strengths, and eliminate their weaknesses. Grant the humans true freedom, unbiased and without personal agenda, and grant the machines cognitive complexity, the ability to aspire beyond simple yes and no answers. Then merge the two.

when you're like 11 or 12 years old, Animatrix and the Terminator movies are nightmare fuel. For awhile, I started getting paranoid that within like 10 years we'd all be dead in a holocaust of some kind. I remember one time being like "If the machines turned against us, we could win...right? OH FUCK WE'RE SCREWED!" Of course, I was an apocalyptic spaz.
