Gaia and 4chan are pretty much... different. On one hand, you've got 12 year olds who obsess over naruto and bleach, with little anime dress up dolls in the background; toting their little emo catchphrases and neo-pets links. And then you've got 4chan, which is a bunch of 20 year olds ACTING like they were twelve, except, it's a whole lot less ...american. That's what sets 4chan apart. They demean and put down "fads" while creating their own (or stealing them from 2chan).
4chan does not contain "internet tough guys" as you put it. We simply say everything is shitty. If you think we're coming down hard on you when we say that, then grow a back bone. Learn to realize that anime/videogames/just about anything is just a passing amusement, its nothing you should feel obligated to defend or share some connection with.
4chan is composed of loners, losers, druggies; outcasts. We generally lack the ability to speak out thoughts, so we do it over the internet. It's pretty much assumed that when anonymous congregate, they will lose much of their "umph".
