>>265262If you're selling on eBay, shipping rates are very important to know when listing. Get a reliable scale, know your prices, and have the supplies stocked. eBay has a lot of streamlined shipping features (tracking, label printing, address verification) that make it easy.
Side note: One common trick is to use Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelopes and put Small Flat Rate Boxes in them to add extra padding. Find your local alternative weekly/free newspaper and use that for the rest of the space. Seal it, slap your eBay formatted label on there, and you're good to go. Bubble wrap is fairly expensive, so make sure you calculate how much you're using and be stingy on small sales.
The general rule is that 1 out of 20 customers on eBay will give you a problem. People open cases or write negative feedback at the drop of a hat. I've seen 3000+ feedback accounts taken down for what happened in two transactions (one justified, the other not so much). Delivery confirmation (free with First Class) stops a lot of would-be scammers. Giving partial refunds is another tactic to employ with irate customers (it happens, even if it's not your fault).
Only insure if it's fragile and/or expensive.
Paypal and eBay almost always side with the buyer in disputes, so you have to be careful not to get them involved unless you're sure the customer is wrong/scamming and you have some proof.

Question for you (or any with experience) in regards to ebay/amazon sales
How do you handle the shipping aspect of it? I mean do you insure your packages, or just send with basic post? Do you have sign on delivery for more expensive items? Tracking?
