Op there is a story about a young Buddha who sought understanding for many years from many masters, but try as he might he could not find it. Until one day, when he sat down under a tree and did no more than just giving up his search wholly, it came to him.
We live in a dream state, everything we assume to be real not being so. A pure state cannot be found through manipulations of the mind. Mind is whatever response you have to whatever you see, at any time. You have only ever moved away from mind at those moments when time seems distorted, in great panic/exhilaration/ecstacy etc
The truth is hidden inside, the only thing you need to learn is what you call yourself, an eclectic mix of emotions personalities thoughts fantasies and fears. The Thing that is telling you that you are a whole, individual person is the Thing that must be understood. Not hated, feared or dreaded, understood.
The only actual way to oneness is to mentally give attention to the part of you that the thought/emotion is occurring TO. Whatever is going through the mind, you take a step back and observe it. No judgement. Meditation means watching. Thinking about watching is not watching.
I've been trying to impartially observe what's in my head for some time now, it is very hard, but they say it gets easier.
