This strategy is by the way almost the same the Microsoft did for SGI also known as the Silicon Graphics Inc. which at the certain point of time was the largest 3D display card manufacturer in the world and supplier of their own CPUs, UNIX-based OS, owned Maya, and Cray supercomputers, and was maybe the best known for their workstations.
What Microsoft effectively did for SGI was that they replaced the CEO of the SGI, then fucked the company, sold patents to Microsoft, and led the company to ruins. Just google up what Richard Belluzzo did for SGI.
