That very weekend, my father took me out to the Great Smokey Mountains, over 2 hours away. We hiked up to a bald in the south end of the park, a good 20 miles away from anything. It was spring so it got very, very cold at night. We had brought enough food for about 3 days.
The first morning, right after I woke up, he had packed his things and simply said, "I'm going on a day hike for a bit, take care". Was still pretty groggy, so it didn't sink in until he was almost out of sight. I spent the next 24 hours SHITTING MY PANTS over being alone in the woods, and having to take care of myself (which looking back, was easy as hell, but still).
He came back next morning, having only camped out something like 500 yards away. We talked about what's important in life.
THAT'S how you teach a kid how to deal with this shit.
