It's also the fault of the distro makers.

Just a simple example: support.
Ubuntu LTS has 5 years of support nowadays (it used to be even less).
For Windows, 10 years is sort of a standard.
XP has ~13 years of support, still getting updates, companies still use it, the vast majority of modern software still works on it.

For the time being, they're in no state to be evil, the only thing they can do to actively push themselves into the betterment of people's minds is make both good products and be a "good" company.

That statement depends entirely on what your specification of a "desktop operating system" are. For the majority of people it's "allow easy and quick access to a large variety of non-native applications", to which Microsoft still has the crown with Windows.

Linux can be made more user friendly and functional, but it lacks the third party software to appease the masses. OS X has a decent amount of software but is inaccessible to the masses. Windows wins because it's the best compromise, not the best OS.

Microsoft has grown to big and lost its focus. They simply continue to follow and imitate companies like Apple. For example, the only reason RT and Surface Pro exists if because Microsoft bleeds corporate users who are switching from Windows desktops to the iPad.

If you're talking about DOS, it's actually Seattle Computer Systems who wrote the DOS which Microsoft then bough, renamed, and then sold to the IBM.

If you're talking about Widows, it's actually IBM made the OS (OS/2). And Microsoft worked with the UI. And when Microsoft and IBM got in to a debate over it, Microsoft stole the OS/2, renamed it into Windows NT, and then continued as if nothing had happened.

Oh and about the UI, check the consepts from Xerox and you know where the Microsoft stole their UI design, and if you know how IBM influenced the design later on with the Presentation Manager you know that Microsoft is full of shit taking innovations of others into their own name with a minimal amount of work.

I remember seeing in news several years ago a case where a steel company (or something like it) was charged for causing worker's death due malfunctioned system. The company tried to pin point it to Microsoft but failed because Microsoft attorneys came in and proved court that any single part and any possible flaw could be anywhere from the control software or something else that caused the system to crash. Google it. It was pretty obvious that the faulty Microsoft software had a part in the person's death but liability eventually fell for the steel company alone. And even they got eventually away with it without paying for the family. I hope I've recalled most of the details correctly. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks!

There is more to CAD/CAE/CAM than Autocad.

Also, if you are considering Autocad LT for 2D stuff, you should seriously take a look at VariCAD and DraftSight.

VariCAD is a 3D parametric solid modeler for less than the price of Autocad LT, by about 100 bucks.

DraftSight is Dassault's middle-finger to Autocad LT. DraftSight is free to download and use. You only pay for support if you need it.

Both run natively on Linux.

Then there's UG/NX, which wipes the floor with Autocad. UG/NX also runs natively on Unix and Linux systems.

Microsoft (and to a large part IBM) did a hell of a lot of good in the 80s to standardize the PC market which was a total clusterfuck. This allowed personal computers to be widely adopted much more easily. I think that speaks for itself.

In the 90s the were a tad bit anti-trust-y, but you would too if you had 90%+ marketshare. They just made a better product and had the capital reserves to make sure they stayed that way buy buying up everything in sight.

Post-Bill Gates, I'm not liking Microsoft as much. Ballmer is obsessed at risking Microsoft's current 90% marketshare for desktop computing in order to get at the ~10% Apple holds. This alienates enterprise users, which is Microsoft's primary moneymaking source. No idea what the hell is wrong with him. At least Apple had the good sense to have a separate tablet and desktop OS. I think if he got booted out Microsoft would be a pretty awesome company again.

Enterprices don't trust a product that's free as beer. And I say this knowing there is nothing special about MS that would have made the home computing explosion impossible if other companies had the chance to really compete over it in the 90's. It may not have been as consistent all the time, or as baby duck friendly, but it would have happened anyway. And it probably would have kept the OS, browser, and office suite markets from stagnating so much way back when.

NT is OS/2 renamed, and having some features added and somethings removed when compared to OS/2 2.0. For example Windows can read HPFS aka. NTFS, and is compatible on API level up to Windows NT 5.0. and even today in fucking 2013, there are STILL mainstream hardware and hardware combinations that get AWFUL performance

i have a 2500K and a AMD 5850, and every out of the box linux distro i've tried has had awful lag in X.

supposedly the drivers are better and fixed for 6xxx & 7xxxx series, but it's just fucking absurd.

yes, those jobs are for low-tier recent college grads, the fact is microsoft will only hire the best of the best at their starting salary, and if you are indeed that good, you can shop around for a similar mid-range salary at any other company (i know because i live in seattle and i did this)

Microsoft paid Netflix to take the Silverlight. Silverlight suddenly got impressive DRM support after Netflix. I think it was partially mutual deal. At least in where I live, the Microsoft paid for the public broadcasting company of my country to only use Windows Media Video Streaming on their homepage. It was after tons of complaints from everybody they moved to Flash. The process took long due corrupted politicians. Then the biggest advertisement supported TV channel took Silverlight after Microsoft paid them to. They'd have otherwise gone to the Flash. They're still using Silverlight but virtually the Microsoft is paying for them to use it. Silverlight works primarily on a Windows and the GNU/Linux and Mac OS X are second class citizens.

For example the Nokia deal. Microsoft pays for Nokia to take the Windows Phone, and they lower the cost of Windows Phone license fees for Nokia a lot. And that's a deal we do have lots of supporting evidence for. That's something Microsoft does when they're not able to compete honestly. Nokia would be much bigger and more respectable company now without the Microsoft. Symbian market was stable, and Meego was just out of the door. Then Microsoft fucked it.

Now that belongs to the Samsung and Android has 75% of the market. Nokia shipped the Nokia N9 which is the first and only Meego phone, and it's an amazing thing. But due Elop it was never brough to the big markets. I just don't understand that why Nokia leaders (mostly the ex Microsoft people in the board of Nokia) wanted to kill their best selling single smartphone in years...

And the support the crappy Windows Phone which has issues with applications, durability, privacy, and is always cloud connected making it very very bad deal for you. It effectively locks you in the Microsoft's software and will not let you act as a normal customer. After you've gone to the Windows Phone there's little way out of there. Apple does the same stuff but at least they don't enforce use of icloud like Microsoft enforces skydrive. And Apple is their own thing.

Those are some generous predictions.
Nokia was HW company. They never did good software. So it is hard to believe they would be able to compete with Apple and Google on this front.

So it is debatable if Elop was cause or just last nail in the coffin.

This strategy is by the way almost the same the Microsoft did for SGI also known as the Silicon Graphics Inc. which at the certain point of time was the largest 3D display card manufacturer in the world and supplier of their own CPUs, UNIX-based OS, owned Maya, and Cray supercomputers, and was maybe the best known for their workstations.

What Microsoft effectively did for SGI was that they replaced the CEO of the SGI, then fucked the company, sold patents to Microsoft, and led the company to ruins. Just google up what Richard Belluzzo did for SGI.
