my memory of electromagnetic physics have never been very extensive so i'm not really sure of how exactly it would work. but as a quench gun dumps it's magnetic field as heat into the coil as it's resistance ramps up this system ought to do the same.
Venting it would probably be the easiest way yes, if went into a sealed compartment containing the same gas you wouldn't need any special refil equipment either, just seal and re-ionize after firing.
i'm still curious as to what plasma resistance is and how it varies with rising temperatures, all metals get higher resistance when they get hot if memory serves me correct. but i'm not sure if that'd apply to plasma too.
