In the tradition of this >>1991956 post, I'd love to share some recommendations of fiction and no-fiction books concerning the French Revolution of 1789 (and some other related topics!). And please do share your own recommendations as well!

Citizens: A Chornicle of the French Revolution by Simon Schama

The appearance of this book is certain to be one of the main publishing events of the bicentennial year of the French Revolution. It blends gritty details about everyday life with an old-fashioned, dramatic narrative form. Among other things, Schama argues that the Old Regime fell not because it was stagnant but because it was moving too fast. Unlike Marxists and "new historians," Schama stresses the importance of individual events and people. He detects the emergence of a patriotic culture of citizenship in the decades preceding 1789 and explains how citizenship came to be a public expression of an idealized family during the Revolution. One criticism: there are no footnotes citing sources. Despite this flaw, Schama's book will please scholars and a wide general readership.

Storytelling Medium Rankings

!OW9DVqIqy6 No.1759982 View ViewReplyLast 50OriginalReport
Video Game > Film > Audiobook > Book

Books are the weakest storytelling medium because they rely on the reader's imagination, which is vague, fallible, and inferior to a presented sound or image in getting the intended message across. The books rely on a writer's ability to transfer ideas and actions not meant to be constrained by a textual medium into exactly that.

Audiobooks are a step up because the voice actors are capable of giving the proper emotion and inflection to the dialogue, and sets a mood for the descriptive portions, as well. Even though narration does not necessarily have an emotion, it still holds the advantage of setting tone for the dialogue, which will.

what does /lit/ think of sikhism? seems like a pretty bro tier religion:

you can eat whatever you want, and meat is usually "jhatka" meaning decapitated in one stroke to reduce to animal's suffering

there is no heaven or hell, but instead sihkism focuses on union with god while living

you should carry a small sword to defend yourself

there is no priest class

superstitions are frowned upon and all things related to spirituality should serve a practical purpose

while homosexuality is generally discouraged by the majority, the Guru Granth Sahib (holy book) doesn't say anything about it and some progressive sikhs don't give a shit about gays

really the only shitty things I can see are a) the demographic, b) god isn't real*, and c) intoxication is forbidden, but this is because the gurus say that you should have a clear mind at all times
