The battle between Japanese electronics companies over a new standard for high-definition video discs could be over.
Two rival high-definition formats have been vying for consumer favour, the HD-DVD standard promoted by Toshiba, and the Blu-Ray standard by Sony.
Both sides have used exclusive deals with movie studios to bolster their case but in the end it has been retailers, and particularly the US giant WalMart that has been decisive in the battle.
Last week Walmart announced it would no longer stock HD-DVD players and movies.
That is a blow for Toshiba with reports in Japan suggesting it will be the end of the format.
A spokesman has today told the ABC that the company is considering its future options but no formal decision has yet been made.

A new sharia law controversy erupted last night over Government plans to issue special “Islamic bonds” to pay for Gordon Brown’s public-spending programme by raising money from the Middle East.
Britain is to become the first Western nation to issue bonds approved by Muslim clerics in line with sharia law, which bans conventional loans involving interest payments as “sinful”.
The scheme would mark one of the most significant economic advances of sharia law in the non-Muslim world. It will lead to the ownership of Government buildings and other assets currently belonging to British taxpayers being switched wholesale to wealthy Middle-Eastern businessmen and banks.
The Government sees sharia-compliant bonds as a way of tapping Middle-East money and building bridges with the Muslim community.
But critics say the scheme would waste money and could undermine Britain’s financial and legal systems.

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith has asked Australians with strong views about Kosovo to show restraint.
Kosovo's Parliament declared the province's independence overnight.
The Federal Government has formally recognised the independence of Kosovo but other countries including Russia are strongly opposed.
Australians with Balkan backgrounds are already debating Kosovo's future and Mr Smith is urging them to be respectful to each other.
"We know that in sections of the Australian community attitudes towards the independence of Kosovo are strongly and firmly held," he said.
"Whatever views are expressed should be expressed by way of restraint so as to ensure that all persons' views in this matter are respected."
A Serbian community organisation has already written to the Prime Minister to express its disappointment with the Federal Government's decision to support the independence of Kosovo.
The president of the Serbian Orthodox Welfare Association, Doctor Marko Marinkovich, says he was surprised at the speed of the Government's decision.
