NIU shooter's girlfriend: No sign he was 'planning something'

No.703603 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
The girlfriend of the gunman who killed five people and then himself at Northern Illinois University last Thursday told CNN there was "no indication he was planning something."

"He wasn't erratic. He wasn't delusional. He was Steve; he was normal," Jessica Baty tearfully said in an exclusive interview Sunday.

Baty, 28, said she dated Steven Kazmierczak off and on for two years and had most recently been living with him.

"He was a worrier," she said. He once told her he had "obsessive-compulsive tendencies" and that his parents committed him as a teen to a group home because he was "unruly" and used to cut himself, she said.

"The way he explained it to me, he had some obsessive-compulsive tendencies," she said. "He was worried about everything, he worried about me."

Check it out:

The way I see things shaping up, it's a 269-269 tie in the Electoral College. Then it goes to the House of Representatives that was just voted in.

Interesting times...

Police in Madison, Wis. believe they ended the spree of vandal defecations in an apartment house on Schroeder Road (laundry room, hallways, items of clothing) with the January arrest of Ronnie Ballard, 19. At Ballard’s first court appearance, Dane County Court Commissioner Todd Meurer set bail at $1,400 and issued a ruling he said he never imagined having to make: As a condition of release, should Ballard make bail, Meurer ordered him to defecate only in toilets.

Senator to Be Sworn in Using Quran

By LOUIS O. LEHMANN
The Associated Press
Thursday, December 30, 2004; 4:32 PM

WASHINGTON -- Sen.-elect Barack Hussein Obama, the first Muslim elected to Congress, will use a Quran once owned by his father during his ceremonial swearing-in Tuesday.

Some critics have argued that only a Bible should be used for the swearing-in. Last month, Virginia Rep. Virgil Goode, R-Va., warned that unless immigration is tightened, "many more Muslims" will be elected and follow Obama's lead. Ellison was born in Hawaii and raised as a Muslim.
Obama's spokesman Robert Gibbs said the new senator "wants this to be a special day, and using his father's Quran makes it even more special."

Do U.S. Troops in Japan Need Babysitters?

No.701248 View ViewReplyLast 50OriginalReport
The Defense Ministry’s Hokkaido bureau is considering assigning officials to accompany U.S. servicemen during off-duty outings when they visit the prefecture for a drill later this month, in light of the recent alleged rape of a local girl by a U.S. Marine in Okinawa Prefecture, a senior bureau official said Friday.

A four-day drill will be held Feb. 25-28 at the Air Self-Defense Force’s Chitose base in the southwestern Hokkaido city of Chitose, according to Tomohiko Futamata, head of the planning department at the Hokkaido Defense Bureau.

“We are considering regular patrols of the area when U.S. soldiers go out and in certain circumstances having bureau employees accompany them,” Futamata told reporters after notifying local municipalities of the drill in a liaison meeting.

“We take seriously the unforgivable incident in Okinawa and will strongly request that U.S. soldiers maintain strict discipline,” Futamata said in the meeting.
