On that note, yesterday i saw a kid riding a leisure bike through a 5-way intersection on a red light. in heavy fucking traffic. on the left side of the lane. passed right by my car. faggot wasnt even wearing a helmet.

The states that have it being illegal to be in the intersection if you entered before it was red are in the minority. You're allowed to complete your action if you were already there. Just like how people who are turning left will move out into the intersection and turn as the lights go yellow to red. That's not illegal.

That CLIPPING for a bike. I've been up to 40 and it's damn fast when all you have is a foam helmet. Not safe at all he deserves jail time for that stunt. It's obvious that those kind of speeds are unsafe on your average bike; and should be left to the professionals (who even get hurt at these speeds) who have set ups designed to handle things like this (ie disk brakes for downhill).

Because bikes are lighter, as others point out. Cars are much heavier and can't be expected to stop like that. Bicycles can and prove the ability to do that regularly.

The following is the Federal Requirment for bicycle stopping distance with a hand brake. It is in 16 CFR 1512.5. Hope it helps.

(1) Stopping distance.A bicycle equipped with only handbrakes shall be tested for stopping distance by a rider of at least 68.1 kg (150 lb) weight in accordance with the performance test, § 1512.18(d)(2) (v) and (vi), and shall have a stopping distance of no greaterthan 4.57 m (15 ft) from the actual test speed as determined by the equivalent ground speed specified in § 1512.18(d)(2)(vi).

You're a moron. I've ridden motorcycles for years and one of the disadvantages to motorcycles is that they CAN stop more quickly than a car, opening us up to possible rear endings. That said, less weight/mass at the same speed is EASIER to decelerate. If you seriously can't slow down like that then I'd consider better brakes or, you know, actually putting brakes on your bike.

Havn't you ever been on a bike and you were riding it and then it wasn't going as fast ? maybe its because there were brakes on your bicycle and they made the bike slow down .

I've never driven a car before , but i bet that brakes would make a car go slower , too so i wouldn't reccomend it

Do you realize the brakes don't have to be engaged at all times, right? Brakes are applied when you want to slow down. But in the case of many bicyclists who ignore lights and traffic signs and fixie poseurs who think they're elite racers I guess Darwinism will just take its course if you're unable to stop in time because you chose to ignore basic safety equipment on your machines.

I got an idea to make the streets of SF safer. Have the cops stop and confiscate any bike that does not have a front brake. The rider could have easily stopped for the light if he had a front brake on his bike. If it does not have a brake keep it on the track where it belongs.

Every time I come here I just see more ignorance and vitriol and hard-headed stubborn idiots unwilling to bend to reason or a different perspective.

Also to the guys hating on cyclists, accidents happen and statistically there's an unbelievably higher number of fatal car accidents per year than bicycle ones, and I live in fuckin' Oxford where every dip-shit student from all over England winds up here, gets a bike and cycles like a moron during their stay.

I'm not justifying shitty cyclists by saying "Well drivers kill people too!", fuck no, but even at my shittest when I was a green as hell total newbie cyclist I was never in danger of hitting anyone or anything, I was the one in danger of dying, constantly, because of cars.

Shit like this happens and it's down to the individual's reckless abandon and stupidity, NOT the fact that he was on a bicycle. I have less leeway with motorists on this issue because they paid money to take lessons and become licenced to operate their vehicle so there's no excuse for ignoring your responsibility behind the wheel of a multi-ton iron, steel and aluminium locomotive, but in no way am I giving cyclists a free pass.

Road safety is a huge responsibility, for all of us. Pedestrians shouldn't expect safety just because the walk sign is green, cyclists shouldn't cycle at unsafe speeds and should maintain situational awareness and good foresight on the road and cars should give people enough space to maneuver. No one is safe because of a changing light and I fucking detest people with this mentality. Your safety and the safety of everyone around you is on YOUR FUCKING SHOULDERS, not the cops or the law or "the rules" or the lights. Start thinking and stop living life on auto pilot and shit like this will stop happening forever. All of you.

Its all about common sense. it doesnt matter if you see a green light, if there is a care coming into your lane, dont fuckin move! Same with walking, "ok the light came on, its safe to go" doesnt mean a thing if there is a hoard of cyclists barreling through the intersection.

a dude on a bixi tied his dog leash to the frame of the bike he was swimming up stream one hand was on the handlebar the other was holding a cell phone with no helmet nor was he really looking up at the street a car turns the corner really fast doing about 40km slams the breaks the dude with one hand grabs his brake but the dog fucking bolts it to the sidewalk dragging the whole bike the guy lands on his face now almost doing a flip it looked reallllly painful the person who was in the car gets out and starts going fucking nuts screaming at this guy I couldn't stop loling so I walked away you know that feeling where it really does feel like you're going to piss your pants pretty sure I would have from that day on I always carry a cam with me
