Some of Beeching's insights were entirely sensible. The ruling theme in the recommendations was that the railways should focus on what they do best rather than on things they can't compete on. People hating on the report usually haven't seen any of the data. I should probably dig through it again to find some of the more bizarre numbers, such as the time that freight wagons spent sat around doing nothing.
