As a result, out commuter rail is split into two systems, one run by Virginia, one by Maryland, and the Metro is run by all three and the Federal government. None of then ever agree on anything, so Metro is falling apart in front of us.
Metro doesn't have dedicated funding, and relies on annual subsidies. White House's budget cut Metro funding by $15M. States are like "If Obama doesn't have to pay, why the fuck should I?" And so continues the vicious cycle of less funding and less safety.
Its gotten worse recently and a couple years ago there was a crash that killed nine people. I ride metro because I like it and its better than driving, but it won't be for much longer at this rate.
