Internet drug lord suspect 'wanted a better world'
Low-key 29-year-old was 'mastermind behind largest online criminal bazaar'
NEW YORK - When Ross William Ulbricht was arrested on Tuesday, the 29-year-old was enjoying the quiet of a public library in a blue-collar San Francisco neighbourhood, where he rented a modest room for US$1,000 a month.
There was little to suggest that the native of Austin, Texas, was rolling in the million of dollars he allegedly earned as "Dread Pirate Roberts", the powerful mastermind behind Silk Road, the world's largest online criminal bazaar.
After hearing the charges read out to him at the federal court in San Francisco on Oct 2, Ulbricht said he could not afford an attorney and was appointed a federal public defender. He did not enter a plea.
Within 24 hours of the court appearance, all kinds of information was being pulled down from the Internet about Ulbricht, who holds a bachelor of science in physics from the University of Texas.
In a YouTube video from last year, Ulbricht and a friend were seen discussing his move during the year to San Francisco.
In the video, he expressed concern that the United Nations was trying "to create global rules and global governance" for the Internet. He also said he might want to start a family.
A Facebook page bearing his name featured a roster of his favourite bands, movies (The Matrix, The Lord Of The Rings) and books (Hyperion, Shogun, The Power Of Now).
The page also contained an essay on independence from July 5, 2010, in which its author ruminated about the meaning of freedom.
"We live in a most unique time" and enjoy more freedom than any previous generation, reads the essay attributed to Ulbricht.
"Let us be thankful for our freedom, and build a world where we, and the generations that follow us, will be freer than any that have come before!"
It is thought that his alleged handle - Dread Pirate Roberts - is a reference to a swashbuckling character in The Princess Bride, a 1987 comedy film based on a novel of the same name.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Ulbricht publicly alluded to his alleged criminal enterprise on his LinkedIn profile, with a statement describing how his goals had "shifted" in accordance with his libertarian economic views.
He said that since completing his graduate school studies at Pennsylvania State University in 2010, he has focused on "creating an economic simulation to give people a first-hand experience of what it would be like to live in a world without the systemic use of force" of the kind imposed by "institutions and governments", according to CNN, quoting his LinkedIn profile statement.
"I want to use economic theory as a means to abolish the use of coercion and agression (sic) amongst mankind," he wrote.
An interesting report on support for Barack Obama in the white supremacist cesspool: President Obama? Many White Supremacists are Celebrating.
With the nomination of Barack Obama as the Democratic presidential candidate clinched, large sections of the white supremacist movement are adopting a surprising attitude: Electing America’s first black president would be a very good thing.
It’s not that the assortment of neo-Nazis, Klansmen, anti-Semites and others who make up this country’s radical right have suddenly discovered that a man should be judged based on the content of his character, not his skin. On the contrary. A growing number of white supremacists, and even some of those who pass for intellectual leaders of their movement, think that a black man in the Oval Office would shock white America, possibly drive millions to their cause, and perhaps even set off a race war that, they hope, would ultimately end in Aryan victory.
“He will make things so bad for white people that hopefully they will finally realize how stupid they were for admiring these jigaboos all these years,” “Darthvader” wrote on the neo-Nazi Vanguard News Network web forum. “I believe in the motto ‘Worse is Better’ and Obama certainly fits that description.” Just last week, Ron Doggett, a Virginian who has been a key activist in the Klan, the paramilitary White People’s Party and the neo-Nazi National Alliance, chimed in with this: “I hope Obama wins because in four years, white people just might be pissed off enough to actually do something. ... White people aren’t going to do a thing until their toys are taken away from them. So things have to be worse for things to be better.”
“Oh man,” enthused “Centimanus” on the white nationalist Stormfront website. “I am gleefully, sadistically looking forward to Obama as president. ... It will be a beautiful day when the masses look at the paper and truly realize they have lost their own country. Added “Fulimnata”: “To the average white man and woman, they could look at Obama and see plain as day that whites are not in control.” Another message, from “TheLastOfMyKind,” agreed: “Could it be that the nomination of Obama finally sparks a sense of unity in white voters? I would propose that this threat of black, muslim [sic] rule may very well be the thing that finally scares some sense back into complacent whites throughout the nation.” “Actually,” said another poster, “if Obama were to win, it would be the best thing that ever happened to the Klan. They would have massive growth.” And “TeutonicLegion” said that “a whole bunch of people will join us and find these boards” if Obama becomes president.
Even David Duke, the neo-Nazi and former Klan boss who is the closest thing the movement has to a real intellectual these days, sees clear advantages in an Obama victory in the fall. “Obama will be a signal, a clear signal for millions of our people,” Duke wrote in an essay entitled “A Black Flag for White America” last week. “Obama is like that new big dark spot on your arm that finally sends you to the doctor for some real medicine. ... Obama is the pain that let’s [sic] your body know that something is dreadfully wrong. Obama will let the American people know that there is a real cancer eating away at the heart of our country and Republican aspirin will not only not cure it, but only masks the pain and makes you think you don’t need radical surgery. ... My bet is that whether Obama wins or loses in November, millions of European Americans will inevitably react with new awareness of their heritage and the need for them to defend and advance it.”
SHOCK: Supermodel Hollie-May Saker first hears screaming behind her on the runway.
HORROR: A protester grabs her arm. The model pulls it back forcefully and punches her nose.
NABBED: A security officer drags the protesters off the runway.
SHE was doing the catwalk at the Paris Fashion Week on Thursday when two half-naked women interrupted the show.
The protesters were from Ukrainian feminist group Femen and had words including "Model don't go to brothel" written on their bodies.
English supermodel Hollie-May Saker, 18, who has been tipped to be the next Kate Moss, didn't take to the protesters kindly.
She punched one of them when they barged into the show, the Liverpool Echo newspaper reported.
Saker said it was one of the biggest shocks of her life and she could do nothing but fight back against the woman who grabbed her.
She said: "I punched her - I didn't mean to but she grabbed my arm and I just wanted to get her off me.
"I was the 19th girl out of the catwalk and I could hear screaming behind me. The next thing I just saw half-naked women with black marker pen scrawled across their bare chests and that's when she came at me.
"As she grabbed my arm she lifted my skirt, exposing me - I pulled my arm back with such force that I landed a punch square on her nose."
Saker, who has been modelling since 16, said she was angry but knew she had to be professional and carried on walking with a "bit of sassiness".
She said she wanted to push them both off the stage because they ruined her favourite show.
"I had been looking forward to the Nina Ricci show for so long, whether I was modelling in it or not, it's such a beautiful collection.
"I was really worried to come back stage but nobody said anything - I felt bad the moment it happened and I was very shaken up by it."
Taqaandan involves bending the top part of the erect penis while holding the lower part of the shaft in place, until a click is heard and felt. The practice of taqaandan has led to an increase in the prevalence of penile fractures in western Iran.
Room 641A is a telecommunication interception facility operated by AT&T for the U.S. National Security Agency that commenced operations in 2003 and was exposed in 2006.
Room 641A is located in the SBC Communications building at 611 Folsom Street, San Francisco, three floors of which were occupied by AT&T before SBC purchased AT&T.[1] The room was referred to in internal AT&T documents as the SG3 [Study Group 3] Secure Room. It is fed by fiber optic lines from beam splitters installed in fiber optic trunks carrying Internet backbone traffic[3] and, as analyzed by J. Scott Marcus, a former CTO for GTE and a former adviser to the FCC, has access to all Internet traffic that passes through the building, and therefore "the capability to enable surveillance and analysis of internet content on a massive scale, including both overseas and purely domestic traffic."[4] Former director of the NSA's World Geopolitical and Military Analysis Reporting Group, William Binney, has estimated that 10 to 20 such facilities have been installed throughout the United States.[2]
The room measures about 24 by 48 feet (7.3 by 15 m) and contains several racks of equipment, including a Narus STA 6400, a device designed to intercept and analyze Internet communications at very high speeds.
The very existence of the room was revealed by former AT&T technician Mark Klein and was the subject of a 2006 class action lawsuit by the Electronic Frontier Foundation against AT&T.[5] Klein claims he was told that similar black rooms are operated at other facilities around the country.
Room 641A and the controversies surrounding it were subjects of an episode of Frontline, the current affairs documentary program on PBS. It was originally broadcast on May 15, 2007. It was also featured on PBS's NOW on March 14, 2008. The room was also covered in the PBS Nova episode "The Spy Factory".
Okay so I was just chilling in my room home alone and I started masturbating. I was really getting into it. I was breathing heavy and thrusting my fingers hard in my vagina. I decided to try fisting myself for the first time. I stuck my hand in and formed a fist. I started thrusting it up and it felt amazing. I was about to orgasm when I couldn't thrust any more. My fist wouldn't budge. I tried rubbing lube around the opening of my vagina but it didn't help! So now I'm typing this one handed with my fist shoved up my vagina to my elbow. Am I lost?
A NEWS release falsely reporting that the mayor of a US town has banned the "twerking" dance move is the latest in a long line of pranks there.
Mr Lawrence Henagan, mayor of DeQuincy, Louisiana, said the local government was not behind a release that indicated it was implementing legal penalties against those caught performing the provocative dance, ABC News reported on Thursday.
"Everybody likes a good joke but after a while that's enough," Mr Henagan said: "We wouldn't waste our time putting kids in jail if they're doing a dance not everyone approves of. We put criminals in jail."
Previous false releases included a story about plans to issue guns to every student in the school district.
Mr Henagan said authorities are working to identify the pranksters behind the false releases. - Wires.
