Most of the realistic insects have relatively simple bases, but then you have to thin the limbs and shape the head. Both can be tricky, and you do need some very thin paper for most. And then there's the need for MC/wet-folding.
The koi can be folded from a dollar bill, so it's not nearly as bad.
But there are plenty of simple insect models. They just don't look exactly like real insects.
Katsuhisa Yamada has a comparatively simple beetle, but doesn't look nearly as realistic as one by Lang.
