worked on the army of two mask last night. I like it alot. It's a good base for any half mask and to me it seems better built than the generic /po/ mask. Thinking of combining Dr. Doom back to this and making it full headgear. I'll resin, paint, and lacquer later.

so yea, built the back part of Dr. Doom only to find out either that thing is really small or I have a fat head.... I'd like to believe my first notion. I'm going to resize it and build the Dr. Doom helm in halves so I can attach them with magnets after I'm done with the painting and whatnot.

Fiberglass resin is the best way to make it strong. Fiberglassing it pretty much makes it an actual helmet.

If thats too difficult for you then a simple way is to print the helmet design on thin card.

To keep this on topic, what weight of paper should I use to build a helm? I'm making the Guy-Manuel helmet out of regular printer paper just to make sure I can build one easily. Later I'll scale it to my head size and all of that lovely stuff.

I really want to dive into building this stuff, but I got a couple of questions.

1.) What kind of paper do you use? I don't think a lot of this stuff would be 1:1 scale if you use regular letter sized paper. Also what would be a good material for durability?

4. people print on card stock. The heavier the better

not sure about regular glue though. i use aleene's tacky. i used regular when i first started with 75gsm(regular printing paper) didn't go so well. not only that it wrinkled the paper because it was wet, but regular glue doesn't dry as fast and doesn't stick as well. so i had to hold the paper for a minute or so on each tab.

Has anyone here made the Canti helm found in this thread? I am trying to figure out what size to print it out as. Most of the time I can figure it out from assembled height but the extra parts throw that measurement off... help plz.

just make the height of the thing 310-330 mm depending on how sure you want to be. if it was me i would go with 320mm or 325mm. it seems to me that 310-315mm is the perfect heigh for it if it doesn't have anything on top of it. like the gundam helmets have that extra cube thing so i think i made my simplified wearable one like 360mm. but 320mm should be fine.

Uh yeah, which is why I am asking if anyone has made it yet. It probably has a completed height of 220something, which I think will be a bit small. I will probably just scale it up a bit and see what I end up with.

Yes, yes it is. However I found it quite easy to build, and it was maybe the third I did. One thing that's quite annoying though is that there are cut lines where you're supposed to cut and then glue the two sides together again, this is almost impossible to glue and unless you manage to glue the edges together it will leave you with holes in your mask, I figured this out the hard way but managed to fix some of the holes.

Also if you plan on actually wearing the mask you can cut some holes along the lines in the mouth filter and poke some holes with a thin nail in the eyes.

an idea i just had is this...
how about a working gas mask made out of cardstock?i remember that the Halo helmet was coated with resin and other kind of materials to make it very durable.think i could later follow a similar process to coat the paper with special resin to make it strong and also install an active filter inside

Er..hrm... there was this thing called summer that suddenly came to my frozen part of the world. When that happends the girls suddenly dress in bikinis, the bbq's start spreading their lovely aroma and cold beer are always relevant.
So you might say that im weak for these things.

However; now it's beginning to get cold again.
As a tease I can say that im working on stuff from Fallout 3, Dead or Alive, Street Fighter and some historical things in the same style as the pickelhaube and the diving helmet.

it doesnt matter bro, either works. I work with fibreglass & carbon fibre for a living (complex aircraft parts mainly). I normally glass papercraft in my downtime @ work, i normally apply thin layers to both outside & inside then do a hell of a lot of sanding & shaping to the outside to lose any blockiness in the model. One good tip is to get some fibreglass tissue & apply a single layer with resin before adding any other fibreglass to a paper model. This layer is really light but the tissue strenghtens the card enough where the shape wont distort or sag when you apply a glass layer. Also if you hand laminating & rolling, MOP UP YOUR EXCESS RESIN WITH A BRUSH AFTER ROLLING, there is no strength in resin alone & all that excess is doing is adding unwanted weight.
