We have a dormitory close by the hospital that acts almost as a nursing home, with younger inmates working as orderlies and assistants. Feeding and bathing them, pushing their wheelchairs around outside for their recreation time, etc. The warden has been trying to get many of the older guys pardoned, but the governor hasn't signed a single one since he entered office.
The men in their fifties and sixties, many who arrived as teenagers, tend to get a lot of respect from both inmates and guards. They were here when the prison was one of the bloodiest on the planet, and have seen conditions greatly improve over the decades. They know how bad things can get, and tend to keep the younger guys from getting out of hand and rocking the boat. There's a mutual understanding that neither side benefits when prisoners act up.
>>6824385The reasoning is that sex is against the rules in the prison, and people use condoms to carry drugs and shit. Fill it full of crack rocks, seal it off, swallow, and retrieve it later. I personally think they should allow them, since like it or not sexual activity is going to happen, and the last thing we need is more diseased prisoners. However, this is a very religious state.
I suggested allowing a proper tattoo artist to set up shop myself, and the warden liked the idea, but it got shot down in the end. The prisoners will use guitar strings and parts from a radio to make a tattoo gun, with a mixture of boot polish, urine, and some other crap for the ink. And of course, they use the same needle on the whole cellblock...
