You must recognise that it happened, and you can evaluate it but that's that. You can only legitimately be proud or guilty of your own acts.
To put it differently, a German has no right to be proud for Kant just because he -out of luck- was born in the same general viscinity. The german or american or greek or french that has read and understood kant can be proud of that.
Similarly, -assuming it true that it happened- a modern German feeling bad for the holocaust is paradoxical. A German or a French etc who supports the idea of a holocaust is guilty of that.
