Criminals can get guns, sure. But when was the last time you heard about someone being robbed at gunpoint? When was the last time a woman was raped with a gun pointed at her head? It just doesn't happen, because the penalties associated with even owning a gun are so steep it's not worth it.
And having an armed populace just means criminals are going to arm themselves as well. I stand a much better chance of getting away from a mugger armed with a knife than I do a mugger armed with a revolver.
The government didn't take guns away from us because they feared us, the government took guns away because people were doing stupid things with them, like walking into a primary school and shooting dead a classroom full of children and their teacher.
I don't know what cloud cuckoo land you're living in, but it's probably the same one occupied by anarchists, communists, libertarians etc. who think people can actually be trusted to be sensible. Sadly humanity doesn't work like that.
