Hey trv's. i need some help here. in a few months i will be taking a job in phnom penh. i'll only be making about 400-500 USD per week. i am an american in mylate 20's and i have traveled a bit in asia, just never to phnom penh. can anyone give me ANY suggestions on what it's like. Will I be making enough money? I pretty much live like a backpacker and don't need a lot of luxuries. What parts of town should i live in? will i be able to get around not knowing much khmer? ANY suggestions are appreciated.

>>82923 thanks anon. one reason i chose phnom penh over bangkok was to experience a more non-western way of life free from mcdonalds and starbucks. i live in a very "bohemian" neighborhood in an american city about the size of phnom penh now, and it's the perfect size and population. it sounds like i will have a nice time - it's to bad that i'm not attracted to asian girls - every google search about the city comes back to a prostitution article.
one more question to those that might know.. in my days off i would love to travel to the neighboring cities and countries. are there trains and buses or boats that people use? what is the most popular way to travel long distances in that part of the world?
Anonymous
>>82923 you are correct I've been all over japan - spent a month there, and a night in Beijing. sorry i sound like a troll.
bored? nothing sounds better to me than sitting outside a cafe reading a book, writing, or drinking a beer in the sun. nightlife, bars, and such are only fun every once in a while - i must be getting old. it seems like there is a sense of community in phnom penh - these are just a few reasons why i chose it over bangkok.

I partied like a bastard from 13-20 years old and got away from that lifestyle and those people. Now, i just like to live in cheap places, enjoy tropical weather, delicious food, hot girls, and an easier life.

>>82936 > are there trains and buses or boats that people use? what is the most popular way to travel long distances in that part of the world? you'll be wanting to go by plane. the roads in that area are shit. maybe a boat to battambang/siem reap or vien tiane or ho chi minh city. make sure you go to laos. check out the gibbons experience. do thailand as well, its probably worth saving money while you're in cambodia to just travel when your job finishes for a few months

>>82936 Fair enough, for a nice place to sit I liked the Bali Cafe, Indonesian food by the lake.
If you have the money, take an airplane. 120km will take you 6 hot, dusty hours by bus.
I agree with
>>82946 , the rest of the region is also very interesting. Though you should probably wait until they stop rioting in Thailand.

Just don't throw the foreign card around too much ( gets you girls but alienates you) and you should be good.

>>82959 Hahahaha I dont think that will help since he will have a euro accent when he speaks english & everyone will pick up on that. I do agree though it will get a lot of girls to talk to him but it will just annoy the guys because theyre talking to him for no reason other than he has an accent.
This french kid(was in my spanish class) came to america with his family & all these bitches were drooling over him. The kid was only like 5' 6" & not even 120lbs but all the girls fawned over him which made me rage internally & almost kick his ass a few times.
But yea OP not sure what kind of a family youre going to be set with & remember what I wrote above. From the foreign exchange students that came to my HS they wrote in the yearbook about getting lost & using a locker. Not sure how big your HS is in norway or if you have lockers. Also remember the dam bus #/schedule it will fuck you up sometimes.

Hey /trv/ I was offered a job where I have the choice of two different locations. I've decided to take the job, but I can't decide on where to go, I can see the up and downsides to both places. I could either go to Singapore or to Hong Kong. little halp plox

>>82908 You do know that 4chan is based off 2chan which is Japanese right?
Anyways, I'm going not just because I love the Asian wimmen (there's plenty of them where I live) but because the job pays well and it's an opportunity to try something else.
I'm not to concerned about living in the strictly controlled Singapore, I don't plan on defacing cars or disparaging the cane once I get there. I'm just trying to decide where I'll enjoy more in the long run. Both places seem to like Americans overall, so I'm really at a toss-up.
