You know, I wouldn't be surprised if Kakifly just stopped giving a shit after realizing that no matter what, he's not gonna be able to make a 4koma on a K-ON!! level.
Or maybe it's just editor's meddling, if you have something that sells as good as K-ON I doubt you're allowed to deviate too far from the proven formula.

The problem for me is that with no plot of any kind the driving force of the series is the girls characterisation and that's getting pretty horribly tangled.
Full Retard Yui is pretty unlike-able. There's ditzy and then there's this bizarre lack of any self awareness that does nothing but burden her friends. I'm not asking for much more than her to be able to dress herself or at least not draw attention to this massive display of special needs.

There's also the fact the first chapter set up something that looks like a minor plot, albeit a cliched one, with the stained suit. Yui messed up Akira's suit and is upset. There we go, we have set up for Yui to try and get her shit together. "I'm sorry, Akira, let me buy you a new one." This spring boards us to next chapter where Yui, ditzy but loyal, gets a part time job to earn money for a nice suit. Then she has enough money and Akira has warmed to her because despite being a moron Yui has worked hard, maintaining a job, her studies and her music practice/tea drinking. They go out shopping together and bond a little. There we go, 3 or 4 (and possibly more) chapters based on a simple event. It's not complex, it's just a little device to tie some events together and gives a good reason for them to become friends.
Now there's totally a chance that this could still happen and if it does I will buy and eat a hat but I think we all know any tiny piece of story there died with "SO CUTE~"

Also, what the fuck is wrong with Yui that her drool leaves such a blatant stain and can't be washed out? Is she a mutant? If she is then please, ignore everything I've said because shit's about to get crazy!

This is probably a shot in the dark, but does any fanart of The Children's Hour exist? If you haven't heard of it, you definitely need to watch it. It's a wonderful, albeit very tragic, /u/-related movie from the 60s.

At least they portrayed her as pitiable, though. I think the movie went out of its way to show that society was at fault, not Martha, which was pretty progressive for its time.

I just find it infuriating how they had a scene of Karen promising not to abandon Martha and offer to start a new life with her somewhere else. It suggests the possibility of a homosexual being capable of surviving in a hostile society, but then they have Martha kill herself anyway.

I wonder if Karen didn't have feelings for Martha too, though. The little girl's goggles flared up when she saw how they acted together, and Karen seemed to enjoy being so close to Martha. I suppose the intended meaning would be that she's too naive to realize Martha's feelings, but maybe she's too naive to realize her own. Had she married the guy, maybe she would've come to miss living with Martha, and more.

Well, I think the reason Martha killed herself was because she didn't truly believe such a life was possible. She didn't want to burden Karen by "forcing" her to be a part of it, when she could simply go back to Joe, get married, have kids, and be happy. It's sad, of course, but you couldn't realistically expect a happy ending for them in a movie of that time period. I don't think a good ending would have had quite the impact, but that's just my opinion.

I still can't really decide what to think about that... there's evidence that points to either side of the argument, really. She was awfully quick to turn down Joe, even when he offered to stay with her. And it says a lot that she was willing to run off with Martha, at the end.

Either way, I like how Karen didn't just run back into Joe's arms during the funeral.

This is an interesting topic. Deaths makes for powerful endings, and our culture seems to consider love stories more profound if they end in tragedy. However, killing all queer characters has some seriously unfortunate implications, and deprives their real life counterparts of positive role models.

True, but what would she do after that? She was entirely convinced that her life was over, and probably felt as though her only option was suicide. It might not have been the "best" choice, but people in that state of mind don't usually make rational decisions. She probably believed that killing herself (as opposed to running away) would be the best option, as she could simultaneously end her own pain while pushing Karen to move on with her life and return to Joe.

I thought Martha's death was powerful not in how it contributed to the movie's "love story" (I'm not sure if those are really the right words for it in this case), but how it solidified the fact that societal pressures can, in fact, lead to a person's death. Issues of homophobia and self-loathing aside, I think the movie's main intent was to portray how an innocent rumor can have fatal consequences.

That's just my own interpretation, though. I can definitely see how the suicide ending could rub some people the wrong way, given the trend of LGBT characters killing themselves in movies/television/etc., but I think her death served a purpose relevant to the film's message.
