I was reading the news about Madoka making it into some mainstream shows and magazines, and whilst I'm a bit happy for that, I'm also not too glad about the idea, since mainstream people are generally mentally-closed to anything not mainstream. So, if there's ever a second season (not SoL, but an actual sequel), I wonder if it'd get tuned down in terms of plot, violence and all over the most, yuri.

Perhaps there'd be no problem with the former too, since shows like Gundam tend to do okay with mainstream audiences and Zeta Gundam is considered some sort of masterpiece for many of them. But in terms of yuri, I'm not really sure. In the PMMM the yuri was rather subtle, so you could interpret anything how you wanted, but given how well the yuri aspect of it had been received by the otaku audience, people from the staff, people from the industry and even acknowledged by Urobuchi, I'd have expected the possibility of something a bit more overt.

But well, whatever.

While Shinbo, Ume Aoki and Urobuchi are all yuri supporters, and I'm 99% Atsuhiro Iwakami is as well, all their official work up now has only been subtext yuri. It's possible they might go that way but since there's no track record in the past for it, I'm inclined to think that it'll stay subtext.

I wouldn't be surprised if they increased the subtext though because the number of purchases made already show there are mainstream buyers. Even though that's the case, the perception of Madoka is very yuri in Japan. Many of the top selling doujins are yuri, pixiv art has a high percentage of yuri, fanbase on every Japanese site and blog is regularly mentions yuri, many of the magazine articles we see on Madoka are frank about references to yuri. Look at how much of the art in the guest fanbook for Megami had yuri pictures from well-known artists. So it seems like there's an accepted, wide-spread perception of Madoka as yuri and no one seems to have a problem with it.

Most of the things you've pointed out are otaku media and that's not particularly mainstream. Otaku in general seem to be okay with yuri in Madoka, but mainstream people (especially in Japan)? I doubt it. But well, Sailor Moon was popular even with mainstream and they had some overt lesbians - even though the main couple was straight. I wouldn't know.

Anyhow, I guess I should just be happy if a second season ever gets announced.

20000~30000: Die-hard fans and votaries come into the play. However, it already passed the level of only appealing otakus, but any animation/manga manias
50000~100000: Almost impossible for late night animation. Gundam and Bakemonogatari is the only TV series that reached this point. Godly sales.

Madoka is at godly sales. You can go to say Nico and see many vids with yuri in it, and believe me it's more mainstream people there. Mainstream fans will also go visit 2ch, get art from pixiv and visit some other popular Japanese sites that are not exclusively otaku territory, and as I mentioned, everywhere yuri is a regular, accepted part of the conversation on Madoka. I don't see how it's possible for someone who's a fan not to encounter that perception.

Forgot to add, we should see with things like the Madoka novel if they ramp up/down/keep the yuri the same. It'll be a good indication. Plus, also, what is mentioned in the mainstream articles. I think it's a good sign that Magica Quartet isn't playing things down...none of the evasiveness I've seen like with Nanoha for instance. Not the anon you're replying to but I'll just say this: it's true that coupling for Madoka characters happen every where, fan art, discussion, interview, MAD vid, etc. But be aware that's because the main cast are all girls and the plot point revolve around their relationship. There's no possible het romance in sight, Kyousuke is more likely to attract hate than support. Outside of /u/, speaking about coupling of 2 girls is not the same as yuri.

Except for Homura's affection for Madoka (which is hard to deny as something deeper than mere friendship), all the other girls' feelings have nothing out of the ordinary: love for best friend (Mado, Saya), love for new friends (Mado, Moemura, Mami), senpai admiration (Mado, Saya), kouhai adoration (Mami), pity (Kyou). Unless a person is aware of yuri concept, they most likely cannot detect anything. The relationship between these girls are very cute and human and admirable, that's why lots of mainstream people like it.

I expect if there're ever a direct sequel, subtext will stay mostly the same just as you can see with Oriko.

Take Ume-tentei's doujin which we see is quite obviously yuri (and the feedback from fans on the most popular part of it btw, is the KyouSaya pages which are the most yuri). Consider this from a franchise perspective. What first season magical girl anime has something as subtexty as the naked space hug or Homura's obession for Madoka? They really pushed it there and honestly I don't think you need to have yuri goggles to think something's there. My young cousin in her early teens who is boy-obsessed and mostly into shounen anime saw Madoka and said without any input or prompting from me, "Wow, that Homura was really into Madoka, huh."

- It confirmed Producer Iwakami came up with the idea for Madoka and talked to Aoki Ume about it first, then they went to Shaft and later Urobuchi.

Also says a mahou shoujo where the protagonist is constantly thinking "What is a magical girl?" is rare. It usually starts with when they become a magical girl and goes from there.

Ume Aoki on designs started with the girls weapons first then decided what clothes went with them. Designs were heavily based on the weapons.

The ep 2. notebook Madoka draws magical outfits in was first a draft by Ume Aoki which was given to Aoi Yuuki who was asked to do some sketches of Madoka. Original thought was Madoka's drawings skills were going to be poor but didn't turn out that way.

Emiri was really surprised when she found out her character QB's mouth didn't move and was like, "I was betrayed!"

Ume thought Mami's fighting style was really cool.

Ume had a role in helping to decide auditions - trying to fulfill requirements.

Context to that is they were talking about how Mami was drinking tea after fighting. Then they starting coming up with ideas as to what their characters might drink after fighting. Aoi Yuuki said strawberry milk for Madoka and Chiwa Saito said coffee for Homura, which everyone immediately agreed that was the case.

I feel though color-wise she matched them up. Pink+Purple and Blue+Red. She knew already that the story was going to revolve around Homura and Madoka. The plot summary she had might have been enough by then to know about Kyouko and Sayaka too. So I think that's why there's the matching color schemes for them.

S – When I saw that reaction, I started to think it was indeed better to animate Kyubei in a scary manner. I have been converted.
K – Ah, that's true. Indeed in the last half Kyubei looked like a scary character.
Editor – Kato-san also did ad-lib performance. “Kyuppi” for example.
K – In the screenplay, it was written as “Geppu”. At first I tried to act in a realistic manner, but Tsuruoka-san (Youta Tsuruoka, the sound editor) told me “please make the sound louder” and what I gave was that (lol)
S – “Kyuppui” also became a talking point.

Editor – In the second half Kyubei really came to its own.

K – That is right. When I checked twitter and blogs I saw all kinds of reaction like “cute” “scary” “hate it”. No matter what they said I am happy. To me they all were words of praise.
S – In Akihabara Kyubei is now seen everywhere, right? Phrases like “make contract with me” has also become very popular. Perhaps it is now the most famous pet character, isn't it? (lol) I also want to know more about the mystery of Kyubei. I want to see Kyubei's planet.

Scans and translations come from all different sources. Although for this particular NewType, I know the person who scanned it bought the magazine. The translation was done by symbv, who does most of the Madoka translations now. It was not always the case. In the past, 4chan use to be more involved.

The main goal of MadoMagi is not to deconstruct mahou shoujo, but it HAS the deconstruction elements. It put the concept of magical girls - traditionally heroines of justice - on the table and then address the questions that make everyone look at these heroines in a different light.

- What does it mean to be a MG?
- What exactly did you do to make me a MG?
- What do I lose after becoming a MG?
--- Is it worth it to become a MG then?
- Who am I fighting for?
- If I'm just fighting for my own wish, am I still a hero?
- What will happen to me if I lost a battle?
- Is it human to demand sacrifice from a subset of people in order to protect the society?

MadoMagi is the tale of a girl who give up her own life and future in hope to save another girl. The corrupted MG system just happened to be the setting of this tale and conveniently presented us a deconstruction idea.

No, there's a very good reason we don't talk about deconstruction with Madoka because it invariably turns into a flame war. Mostly because people can't even agree on what it means.
But let me present a few facts:
1) No one involved in the making of Madoka has ever in any interview or article, not even once, described it as a deconstruction or anything to that effect. Deconstruction seems to be some kind of western fan wank because I don't see that on 2ch or Japanese sites either (except maybe ironically).

I was under the impression that the term "deconstruction" was used to refer to an example of a genre which, instead of simply following the pre-existing clichés or making a comedic parody thereof, actually actively "attacks" those clichés by addressing them explicitly and then defying them.

I think "Deconstruction" is really only something you can honestly examine in retrospect.

I also think its instructive to compare how Magica Quartet put forth Madoka, as opposed to how Yamakan put for Fractale. Shinbo and the others did not make a big deal out of the show, they didn't claim it was going to change anime, or bring forth any particularly special vision, in fact they actively tried to hide Urobuchi's involvement at first.

On the other hand, Yamakan was making these grand pronouncements about how Fractale was his vision of how anime should be, and if it was a failure he'd retire from anime forever.

NewType: What prompted this Puella Magi Madoka Magica project?

Shinbo Akiyuki: It was Aniplex’s producer Iwakami Atsuhiro who proposed the project. He then lent me Fate/Zero that Urobuchi-san wrote and asked “what do you think about having Urobochi-san’s script on Aoki-san’s character designs?” I then saw the light.

Urobuchi Gen: Since the project is full of talents, I surely can’t hold back on its potential. Although this is my first time writing script for an entire anime series, my plot proposal during the first meeting got accepted, and the script went on smoothly without much change to it from the first draft. It went on without a hitch to the degree I feel uneasy and began to question is it really okay.

If you've tried to read you'd have seen I said this show did not crave to deconstruct anything, the setting just happened to have those elements. If this was not a mahou shoujo but a sci-fi, a space opera, a mecha, an ancient Egypt, a warfare, etc. series:

- Homura could still be a time traveler wanting to save Madoka again and again.
- Madoka could still be just as naive and selfless, choosing to die to protect other people in the end.
- Sayaka could still be broken by her ideal
- Kyouko could still be a rogue who turned out to be good.
- Questions about human value, the will to do good, wise/idiotic decisions, worthy/worthless sacrifice... all could still come up. This is the most important.

What I wanted to say is that the story could have discard this whole MG business and still maintain all of these main points. That's why the deconstruction of MG is not what Gen is trying to tell, nor it was the wholesome thing that struck the mass of viewers, nor the thing that make people presented MadoMagi in mainstream news, nor the thing that make people write analysis book.

However this story had chosen the mahou shoujo genre, and within it we witness the underlying issue of the concept that had never been mentioned before. It broke the happy-go-lucky and bubbly image of MG, people now have to think twice about them.

I'm not a Westerner btw.

I don't know what you are but I can say your opinions of it not being important that it's a mahou shoujo or that it somehow deconstructed its conventions, is definitely not in line with what Japanese fans thought of it. They think that it is important it's mahou shoujo.

But being darker or more surprising or shocking is not the same as deconstructing. Dark and shocking elements is not foreign to mahou shoujo. People tend to discount it because there's so many light moments and because the anime ends on a positive note where good triumphs and magic/wishes/dreams/hopes etc. come true. Madoka isn't really that different.

One of the reasons I'm wary of 'deconstructions' is that they seem to imply the genre they're dismantling doesn't deal with the questions this superior work chooses to highlight. As for that list, plenty of mahou shoujo series deal with many of those topics, though generally with less grimdark. For instance, Sailor Moon frequently showed the heroines having to abandon certain dreams and possibilities because of their duties. Questioning the basic premise of the genre, i.e. the 'good' side creating child soldiers to fight their battles has also been done in, among others, CCS and Princess Tutu.

I don't think Urobuchi was trying to "deconstruct" anything, though, since much of Madoka depends on following two conventions very closely: A pure-hearted main character and lesbian subtext. 2) Magical girls have died fighting evil. They can come back but it may take a while like waiting to be reincarnated.
3) A price on being a magical girl is not new either. There's been concepts like risking burning out your body or having to kill people who aren't entirely evil. Or like if you take the whole basis for Sailor Moon, you get powers but in exchange for being reborn again and again to combat evil. There's no total win when you set things up like that, by the way.

Love and courage also doesn't always win either. To cite one of /u/'s favorites, Fate's mother as a classic example. Also a case of realistic abuse and suffering.

As to the saving people as a side effect of a wish, I would disagree with that interpretation. I think the girls wanted to save people and weren't only doing that to get a wish.

It's not like Madoka can't be seen as having having a single meaning that would be something like "it is possible for good to triumph, but fuck if it isn't difficult". I'm sure you can find contradictions that negate that reading, but that's possible with anything, at least according to Jock Derrydoe.

Why not, given what you describe doesn't goes against canon information? I'd like to watch/read something and think for myself, formalize my own reasons. It's poor practice to just fall to "the creator didn't mention that" and stop thinking. Literature critics will die from that.

Japanese make it easy to follow main trends and thoughts on an anime. The main discussion thread for Madoka in 2ch is clearly marked as well as links to all the side topic threads at the top of every thread. They're archived as well, so it makes it simple to find what 2ch thinks.

There's also a list on the Japanese wiki of all the magazine articles fans have found referencing Madoka in any substantial way, which would definitely include any interview by someone involved in the production of it.

Is this everything? No. But if a topic is viewed as a major one (which deconstruction would) or a commonly held thought, it's extremely unlikely it'd be overlooked by 2ch.

As I said from the start, the problem with deconstruction was that I see no agreement on a definition of it aside from the classic philosophical definition. I've also said that I've not seen the term used or anything that could look like deconstruction used or described by anyone involved in the production of Madoka or even really in the fanbase discussion or critical analysis.
However, as I also said, if someone knows of a source where they see anyone involved with the making of Madoka describing it in terms of what they (as in that anon's thoughts) consider deconstruction, then I'd like to see it and put it on the wiki.

Can't think of one as a final boss or even really evil. An antagonistic attitude is pretty common, even temporary betrayal due to being tricked or where someone evil pretends to be a mascot friend...but those are temporary circumstances.

In CCS, the mascot character was working for the major antagonist, though neither were evil. Princess Tutu had the person who granted the heroine's powers turn out to be evil, but mascot characters weren't involved. Sailor Moon's Luna wasn't a villain, but neither was she above using tricks and threats of violence to get Usagi to become a magical girl and then obey her.

So, no such cases as far as I know, but the power granter's morally ambiguous position has been acknowledged.

Deconstruction is pointing out that things won't go the way it normally goes in an established trope. Suppose there exist a trope in which people will succumb to their basest instinct in an apocalyptic situation. We shall call this trope "End-time Chaos". To deconstruct End-time Chaos, you simply need to show that some people will hold to their altruism in such time, because being good is also in the nature of humans. Unlike what the majority of people think, Deconstruction(tm) isn't making things ridiculously grim, dark, edgy, bloody, and/or gory for no reason other than to put yourself on a literary pedestal. Such falls under the purview of Darker And Edgier and/or Bloodier And Gorier. And those tropes are Egregious.

Deconstructed Trope is a kin to Subverted Trope and Defied Trope, in which the author, almost always consciously, make sure that things in story doesn't follow the established trope. Deconstructed is more thorough in that it directly attacks the central principles of said established trope.

Oh, and Madoka is a Reconstruction: in Urobutcher's vision, it's established that magical girls are DOOMed and (as Homura said in-story) the concept of magical girl itself is effin ridiculous, but Madoka does things common to magical girls to achieve a Good End(tm) common to other magical girls anime. Thus, the problem of magical girl system is exposed, but the solution to solve it is then presented, and that solutions does not deviate (too much) from the formula.

Damn, I can make a fucking doctoral thesis out of this animu and get a Magna Cum Laude [sic].
