Soooo I recently aquired of a Bushmaster M4 A3 and I go to pick it up on Saturday.

What are its advantages and disadvantages? Off the cuff an "advantage" is the removable carry handle...ookay..

and a disadvantage is apparently the 16" may have trouble getting the 5.56 up to proper fragmentation velocity whereas a 20" barrel does not. Truth?

Anything to add would be nice.

I haven't heard anything bad about the Bushmasters, except that certain molded Orlite magazines won't work in them, and that there's a couple of Orlite mags that ONLY work in Bushmasters.

Also, if the front sight's not removable, mounting sights on the rail (uncovered by removing the handle) isn't much good, as the front sight assembly gets in the way.

It's got a bayonet lug, which means it's pre or post-ban manufacture (not built during the '94 AW ban).

Also, the problem with non-fragmenting 5.56mm seems to have been more of a problem with the 10" (cut down Colt carbine) and 14.5" (M4) barrels used during Gothic Serpent in Mogadishu; dunno if it's a "true" 16" on your rifle (as in 16" of rifled bore, not just a 14.5" with a welded-on 1.5" muzzle brake/flash hider), but if so, it's not a problem.

It's also got that uber dangerous collapsable stock so I can shrink it down so much i can put it in my pocket ZOMG

I'm thinking its 14.5" with the welded on flash suppressor but I'll know for sure Sat.

Mounted correctly, the optics will coindicate with the front sight post. You'll never notice it.
Lower power reddots/electrooptical sights will yield similar results. Youll never notice the front sight, as your eye will be looking at the reticle or dot.

i aquired one of these a few weeks or so ago, not a bad gun for 850, the front sight doesnt really get in the way (i use an aimpoint) and it is a true 16 inch barrell as long as its a new one, or at least most are(mine is) overall, fantastic rifle, one of my favorites for sure, it outshoots me so i cant say anything about how accurate it can be, but its in the moa/submoa range

Cool. I traded my DPMS 20" AR, 16 mags and ammo for a 1919a4 so I've been looking for a replacement 5.56 platform.

Remove the 0 and divide the 85 by two and thats about what I got mine for.

I won it in a raffle. I still cant believe it.

Can't say I know of any problems that Bushmasters have, except with the tie in with the DC sniper a few years back.

I hear Bushmaster is pretty much top tier along with Rock River and Armalite (I think thats the order)

Doesnt Colt use different size pins than everyone else? I hear there's some compatibility issues when swapping parts.

Was Colt the exclusive supplier of M-16's to the military for a while there? Whenever a company gets a govt. contract the quality starts slipping from cranking out tons of weapons. Customer service is affected as well.

Happened with Sig too, so I hear.

Yes.
Since '64, with the SP-1.

It's not a big deal to install a military upper on a colt civvy lower though, as there are offset pins to allow this.

Quality did not slip, either with Colt, FN,or Bushmaster. The post build inspection and test firing procedures performed are very good at weeding out the good from the bad.

There are some magazine makers that churned out large batches of shit, but these were immediately rejected, where they turned up at gunshows marked at insane prices.

Ahh.. dont know why I was told to steer clear of Colt. Maybe because the name usually has a HUEG price tag attached to it.. I'll ask next time I'm at the store...rubbing my win in their faces :D

a "normal" 5.56 round (M855) fragments at around 2700fps. the typical muzzle velocity out of a 20" barrel is ~3200, and out of a 14.5" is ~2900.

in short, out of an M4 it will still fragment, but it will stop fragmenting at reduced ranges.
