/b/ is better at photography than /p/

!nSmsPBWyaY No.1409974 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
TL;DR
> Photography isn't just nice images:
> it's stating that something happened;
> it's an action before, during and after the shot;
> it's a mean of relating to others and other things.
> it's much more. Let's not limit /p/ to just nice images.

Long version:
This is my point: /b/ is more aware of the inner workings of photography than /p/ itself. You don't believe it, do you? Well, I'll show you in three points!

1) First of all /p/ looks at photographs just as nice or cool images. This is not a bad thing itself, but it's just ONE of the possibilities!

Photographs are also a way of stating that some things have been and are not: take your childhood pictures, your ex gf images or the ones of a dead friend or relative. Look at them. If you feel nostalgia, anger, shame it's not because they are cool or symbolic images. It's because photography works this way: it shows you in the present a piece past. /b/ realizes this when is asking you a timestamp on your boobs or when says "pics or it didn't happen".

/b/ knows inconsciously that photography works by stating the past. /p/ doesn't: /p/ looks at photographs as nice paintings, giving a shit about this link with reality and past.

hey /p/ - guess what?!
I'M LOADED AGAIN!!! lol
so i'm gonna talk sone shit for a minute..

who HAS NOT sold their skills or photos?
or even had a shot published?

i know that a lot of you are capable of it.
some of the stuff i see here is really nice - i would hang it on a wall.
why aren't you guys doing anythig with the talent you have?

i know 5hoe, pskaught & photoshop are making money.
*probably others that i'm not thinking of right now*
they have some serious skills and are exempt from this crown royal induced babble.
but the rest of you (you know who you are) really need to do something besides personal projects & 365 stuff on flickr.

iv'e sold a few & had 1 published.
i know i need to make a decision about doing this for a living or keeping it a hobby... but some of you guys are a LOT younger than i am and have a chance to make a career out of taking photos.

listen- i'm kinda locked in to my shitstain of a life with a wife & kids and a business to run.. but a lot of you still have time to do something you love before you get stuck.

if you're 25 & under, have no major responsibilities & can deal well with people... fuckin do it.
stop working a shit job & eat some ramen for a couple months until you get in the groove.
seriously.
if i had started this seriously at 25, i would be a very happy man today.

i'm probably past the point of a 'career change'.
i'm old.
titanium knee, blown rotator cuff, bad back & just fuckin old.
you guys are young & have some talent.
make the most oif it before you end up sitting at a desk in a shittly little office 10 hours a day drinking crown royal wondering when you'll get a chance to take some fucking photos again.

please.. don't get old & realize its too late to do something you love.

alright- i'm done preaching.
night /p/.

*pic related- its my best friend.

Some people wanted the folder of photos I've saved over the last couple of years. Takes quite a while to upload and I still need to go through and sort out the photos, but here's the first link for now.

http://www.mediafire.com/?unjxo6tu8nyy9oh

Lots of cats, lots of girls, a surprising amount of /p/'s stuff, a few film screenshots and some depressing landscapes.

If anyone wants to do a similar thing and upload their saved photo folder, this could become a really decent thread.

New Epic Technique

!ikNc8yUYjM No.1136714 View ViewReplyLast 50OriginalReport
Has anyone here heard of the "Jacob's Ladder" technique? I happened to come across a link describing it about an hour ago. At first I was completely lost. It's EXTREMELY complex to understand. Once I started to figure out what exactly it is, I nearly shit myself with glee. I haven't been so excited about how a new technique will improve my processing since frequency separation. This will completely revolutionize the way we correct color and adjust contrast. Wow, I still can't believe it. The sheer amount of control and versatility is mind-boggling. For me, black and white conversions, contrast, saturation boosts, and hue correction will never be done the same way again. Once you understand it, I think you'll agree.

I'm not at a level where I can explain it clearly yet, but here's the gist of it. Anyone who's familiar with working in LAB mode will be a step ahead. It copies the LAB (also RGB and CYM if you wish) channels and brings them into the layer panel so we can use adjustment layers on them. This somehow allows the channels to act as luminosity mask of sorts which filter how the curve adjustments affect the image. With this comes a tremendous amount of control over the color channels and luminosity values of the image. This one will definitely need a video tutorial for me to be able to explain effectively. Wow, I still can't believe this is possible. Check out what I was able to do with the attached image when I barely understood how to work this method. This is insane!!!

Dear Photoshop® !ikNc8yUYjM

Please make some video tutorials, I am semi-retarded and can't follow your well written instructions. You will make bank on youtube demonstrating your godlike photoshop skills in the form of tutorial videos.
