1. Make sure the eyes are always in focus! Both of them OR the closest one in camera.

2. The subject/what is happening is always more interesting than all the technical mumbo-jumbo people bitch about on this forum. I mean, sure, sharpness/composition/colortheory/anything else is important, but if there is no voice, no soul, or no meaning, then what the fuck does it have?

3. Really good photos that out-do your last shit are really fucking rare. If you shoot like 4 times a week, you might get one about every month.

5. Your gear doesn't matter. I personally got into a rut this summer that if I didn't have an Alienbee B1600 and a Vagabond that I couldn't make the images I wanted. Turns out I could have been shooting and making good images instead of waiting around.

6. Shoot a lot.

7. Read books on art theory. Photography is an art and it helps. Creative Illustration by Andrew Loomis is a pretty good book. Read books on composition. Read every month!

8. Make a journal or a folder of images that are awesome. Try to think of a few things for each image as to why it's good.

9. Learn what makes an image bad. Don't try to think of every image you make to be bad (I got into that, too. Bad move). Sharpening your eye for good photography beyond personal taste takes time, but it will come. I'm still doing it and I've been an "artist" for years.

10. Take a break! Abandon your work for a month (if you don't need to pay bills!) and come back to it. Take that time to scour blogs, find new artists you like, read the books, and get back. Having a fresh view on things will help you tremendously. It might help you sharpen your creative voice and give you an entirely new perspective.

12. Even if you try to copy your idols, which is actually a pretty healthy thing to do since you will never make the same work they made, your work will still be spoken with your creative voice. Completely copying is something else. For instance, if you re-make "Afghan Girl" and call it your own, you will be a hussy. If you put a new creative twist on it or add some visual irony or humor, you are the shit.

50mm is the closest to what the human eye sees. So you get the 'truest' look.

50mm is the approximate look you get from both eyes. Using just one eye, 70mm is really the natural focal length. You really shouldn't do anything with a 50 except full body shots or Environmental portraiture where you want to show context. For 3/4 and head shots etc you want at least 70, probably more like 85.

Why is it that focal length from one eye is different to two?

Does that mean that a 50mm shows more depth than a 70 or 85? because it imitates two eyes not only one?
Does it make sense what I'm trying to ask?

alright, it's like this. wide angle lenses are just that. lenses that have a field of view with a wide angle. telephoto lenses display a field of fiew with a narrow angle. with both eyes open you see more around you, with one eye close you cut off part of what you see.

like in this pic. both eyes open results in a field of view of roughly 120deg. close one eye and you'd lose about 20degs

How does one know at what apertures/distances doing this will get everything in focus and at what apertures/distances you will end up focusing on nothing important (e.g. foreground and background both out of focus).

re photoshop automation. Last shoot I worked out how to import and put my normal 4-5 layers with "starting" settings then save as a PSD.

However I could not work out how to stick the raw file in as a smart object during this import.

Any ideas?

white balance is needed because in real life your eye recognizes a broad spectrum of reflected colors as white, but on a picture you can't tell a yellow wall from a white wall lit by a tungsten light.
you can set WB by presets for typical situations (mid day sun, tungsten, sunset ...) or you can fine tune it in some ways:
you can use a reference picture - snap the white wall, a grey object ... anything that's supposed to be a grey or white tone in the real world and the camera will pull the white balance from it and you're good until the light changes.
same works with adjusting it manually (mostly in some graphic form) you slide the white balance in between blue&yellow and green&red till the wall looks white on the camera screen.

you need to do this kind of shit ONLY for jpg snaps and only if you need to have a consistent WB on all your shots of a set f.e.
because if you shoot RAW you can just adjust it in post.

Hey sorry for butting into this thread but I have a really urgent question. I found some old negatives that were taken many years in the past although they have now been destroyed. I know the photo store that developed them but I am very far away right now. So I was wondering how long a photo developing shop holds onto their negatives? Is there someone who is familiar with the archive here?
Because I am sure nobody really knows what stuff is there except the people who actually added threads in the past.
I have often considered assimilating these threads to the pseudosticky, but there is too much crap in forms that aren't easily pasteable, and too many potential issues with rights on images.
...so it's more effective to archive them and then reference them in the pseudosticky. If someone was to point out numerous /p/ related, and *useful* thread archives i could index them separately in the pseudosticky... for more prominence. But the archive in general is already listed.
