Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 263 is an active duty osprey unit. They are slated for deployment to Iraq in the fall of 2k7 unless they recieve their quota of Ospreys sooner. The Osprey isn't canceled or on hold pending devo, its in low rate production.

You know low rate production right? Its that thing almost all of our new military hardware is in.

I was in Morehead city NC a couple weeks ago on vacation. One of these was doing touch and go landings near the coast. Was really neat seeing one in action.

The osprey functions like a helicopter AND a fixed wing aircraft, so its flight envelope (speeds, altitudes, and manuvers it can safely operate at) is twice as complex as a normal craft might be.

If I recall the big crash that got this project in hot water was caused by an osprey converting from flight to hover while flying (forward) too slow and falling (downward) too fast. Somehow stalling the blades when she was also unable to manuver with control surfaces.

Vortex Ring State, iirc vortex form on the leading edge of the blade and through the change in airflow experienced of the edge of the blade negates the lifting, can happen with all rotorary bladed craft, more frequently with helicopters, also known as settling with power. The "commonsense" resolution of increasing power to the rotor, actually makes things worse.

I was down at Camp LeJeune, NC in 2000 when that sucka went down and killed everyone onboard. They were stationed at Cherry Point where they did all the flight testing. It was quite common to see 2 or 3 of them flying in formation before the crash. After that they were grounded for a long time.

As i understnad it, props tend to be more durable and more fuel efficient. This thing doesn't travel at that fast a speed.

Though i would imagine that a jet engine wouldn't have the same problems as a prop with VRS stuff.
