That being said, considering how much it's talked about on /a/, and in the anime community in general, should I watch it? Or is it just shitty shounen that's popular for that very reason?

Would definitely say its worth your time. /a/'s typical opinions are just horseshit, so whether its good or not is going to depend on you, but if there was any anime i would tell people to give a shot just for the sake of knowing it - this would be it.
