I think its more accurate to say that people are afraid of mutations. Especially religious ones because that would invalidate their views on how man came to be and it further validates atheism because in atheism we have room for mutations, we know that humans can be born abominations, we know that defining perfect humans is also almost impossible since a lot of traits stem from our hunter days and we only had a brief period where our biology became accustomed to farm existences. (explains why so many people are lactose intolerant).
