Inside are Rhombodera Stalli nymphs aka Shield Mantis as well as Gongylodes Gongylodes nymphs aka The Wandering Violin Mantis.

Just a generic pet loving bloke here, never really been on this board before but I'm thinking of getting a mantis or two.

I used to keep a few species of stick insect, both were very easy to keep and didn't require much work other than a change of leaves every now and again.

Are there any mantises in the same ball park or should i stick with the easier stick/ leaf insects that I used to have as a kid?

Yes. My father used to buy those Chinese mantis oothecas they sell at garden shops and after an initial feeding of fruit flies would just let them kill one another until there was only one huge one left. The biggest one wouldn't even eat all the others... a lot of them it would just bite the heads off of, so there'd be a tank full of limbs, headless mantids standing around, and one big angry looking motherfucker. Then he'd call it "the Highlander" and let it go.

To some extent. You need a large enclosure and you need to keep them seperated so they wont cross each other and tear into each others neck.

...not really. In general, once they reach a certain size they need to be separated. Most don't eat one another as a last resort, they just don't give a fuck. There are exceptions as some species can be considered communal, like ghost mantids and cryptic mantids, but they'll also turn on one another if there isn't enough alternative prey.

If the person who made these is still around, I purchased one of these containers recently to make a new mantis cage, but the lid has me puzzled. How do you alter it so that your mantids can breathe? Does it have anything to do with the sponge things on the ceilings?
I was going to cut a hole in the roof and super glue a screen on top of it so I could still look down on my mantis. Any suggestions?

Yeah you can cut a hole on the roof and just glue a plastic or aluminum screen/mesh. Also line the insides with the same material because they can't really climb plastic.

I did, I bought the largest container they had. I've got the plastic mesh material all set, my biggest concern was about the sharpness of the metal after cutting it. Would it be an issue for the mantis, or would they just not notice?

I have fond memories of stuffing some dollar bills in an envelope with a hand-written order to some outfit that sold ootheca by mail order, bumming a stamp from my mom, and then blissing out when a padded envelope arrived weeks later and my gladiatorial battle for supremacy could begin again.

They were both cheaper and cooler than sea monkeys. Plus you didn't have to buy packets of special food for them because they ate each other until they were large enough to eat the crickets I captured in buried mayonnaise jars.

I've tried, but I can't seem to find a good way to keep it on without it bunching up and looking fugly as shit. Cutting open the roof and attaching the netting is working really well so far. I also attached netting to the sides.

I recently got a few crickets for my mantis religiosa, but they've so far proved to be too big for him to eat. There are also two VERY aggressive crickets in the bunch, who have actually eaten more of the other crickets than my mantis has. I've moved my mantis to a new home, but I'm not sure what to do with the crickets. On the one hand I want to see how their situation will play out, but on the other hand I don't want them in my room if they're not going to get eaten by my mantis. What do?

Crickets are dirt cheap. Do whatever you want with them.

Protip: cut the head off a cricket and place the fluids near the mantids mouth.
