This is my first post here but I lurk quite often.

I was wondering if anybody out there has any advice for introducing kittens into a home where there are older cats.

I might be getting a kitten and I already have a one year old cat in the house. He's very friendly, loves people, is incredibly easy going and loves to be held. We looked after another kitten briefly and he really didn't get on with that but we didn't really have the time to spend getting them used to each other.

So does anybody have any tips for introducing new cats to each other? Or even tips on getting a new kitten in general? I want to do this right and make sure both kitties are happy.

They fight occasionally, but they get along, groom each other, sleep with each other. It just takes time. Don't show affection to the kitten in front of the older cat, and give treats to the older cat first. I never knew how jealous cats can get until we got this kitten.

i would keep the kitten in a room segregated from the other cat and let them sniff through the door, then when that looks like its going ok, get the kitten out of that room and let the big cat in the room that the kitten was in, so he can get his sent, and so you can see how the older one reacts to getting to be in that room, he he charges in like he is gona kick some ass, then keep them apart longer
as for new kitten advice, have a litter box set up for him when he gets their and put him in it, i did this with my cat when he was a kitten and he knew that that was a nice place to poop so hopefully that will take care of litter training for the most part,
get him neutered as soon as he is hold eanough
dont declaw him
then feed kittin food
play, love, and enjoy

Okay, thanks guys. This is all excellent advice.

I think I'm going to get a little girl cat. We have a boy at the moment and he's very dominant and playful. The kitten we had briefly before was a girl and we started her off in a room on her own but our cat just sat at the door growling at her.

I think this time we'll be a lot more subtle about it. I'll probably spend time with the kitten and watch her, while someone else looks after the big cat. Then I'll leave the kitten for awhile to get accustomed to her new surroundings.

I have a good few weeks to help her settle in well and help my cat get used to the new member of the family.

He's sat behind me on the back of the sofa now, with his tail wagging furiously. I'm sure he can read this thread...

Any more tips?
