Hey /an/... im swimming in foreign waters here, so bear with me

Anyways, my friend had a litter of 11 pups of PitbullxMastiff.. although the puppys have significant pit features with barley any noticeable mastiff properties.
The little bugger im getting in 20 minutes is a 8 week old, golden brown sweet little guy that i cant wait to train and the like.
well..my question isn't really IS DIZ WIN Y/N?!?! but im looking for some good advice. what should/shouldnt i do? do any of you guys have pit's..? hows it like? any info/comments/lurk moar newb/ is appreciated.

There is nothing weirder than a 100lb dog trying to relax on top of you just keep plenty of aspirin handy so you don't develop blood clots in your legs (only semi-serious, we knew a guy with a Great Dane who felt it was his job to fit onto your legs to cuddle, my lower body has never fallen asleep that fast in my life).

Tips: you own a dog. It will act like a dog. It will probably be more aggressive towards other dogs than a standard dog, but it will not act more like an alligator than a dog.

The only thing that makes a pit bull distinctively a pit bull is that when it ever bites you out of pain or fear, it will hurt like a motherfucker.

PROTIP #1: be prepared to take some flak from the general public regarding the physical appearance of your dog. whether or not it's a pure breed or not, people are going to take one look at him and freak the fuck out.

PROTIP #2: use this as an opportunity to show what an awesomely well behaved dog you have and what a conscientious, responsible owner you are. start socializing your dog starting from the first day you bring him home. take him out, let him meet other (friendly) dogs and people of all ages, races, gender, etc. introduce him to new/scary situations and praise him when he acts appropriately (i.e. calm, confident--but not assertive). LEAVE NO VARIABLE UNTOUCHED. you want your dog to be the most well balanced, friendly, and calm pup on the block.

be SURE to take him to dog parks, the beach, crowded places, anywhere, from an early age and THROUGHOUT HIS WHOLE LIFE. Don't just take him out for the first few months, then shirk off socializing him for the next few months. I can safely say that I've had a dog who, while he loved other dogs as a pup, our negligence to be constant about parading him around dogs in his other years left him aggressive. Lovely with people, he just hated other dogs.
Take your dog out very, very often. Introduce him to many strangers, and show him that people who walk up to him are not ever a threat. Encourage friends, family, ect, to pet him and give him treats when they come over, so he can associate newcomers with good things as opposed to scary feelings. While Pit Bulls can indeed be good dogs, if you leave out anything, the dog's natural inclination to be violent can and will come out. You're working with a dog who will not naturally be gregarious if you do nothing; you'll need to instill it into him.
Good luck with the dog; and as another anon said, be ready for people to be afraid of your dog. Not everyone, of course, but still. People may cross the street once they see a Pit walking down.

Also, you'll probably be able to tell how big he'll grow in a couple of months. His growth spurt will kick in, and he probably will keep growing until he's 2 years old, but you'll probably be able to gauge his full size early on depending on how big he gets during the first few months.

He's going to share his home with a brussles griffon (sp?) who is just like a big cat. lazy, loving, sweet, etc.. they just met tonight and there while max, my griffon, didnt pay much attention, my new dog seemed to love him. my dog loves nothing more then to snuggle up to me. and when he doesnt see me for a few seconds and then sees me again he leeps twords me with kisses(that smell like the devil himself shat in his mouth). it's great. im going to try to keep him as social as possible with other dogs, for i know what the worst case scenario could be.. thanks for the tip.

i want a sweet name, for a sweet dog.

also, i'ts instinct for me to let him sleep next to me. but is this ok to do? or should i directly stick him in the cage at night? remember this is his first night away from his 10 other brothers and sisters.

From a dominance point of view, you shouldn't allow your dog to sleep on your bed because it implies that he's high up in the pack order, when you want to keep him as submissive to you as possible. I would suggest putting his crate right next to your bed on the ground however, so he can see, smell, and hear you.

I know it's tempting to let him sleep with you, but you want to make a habit out of doing things that will block any chance of him becoming dominant right from the get go. A good rule of thumb is: do not let him do anything now that you do not want him to be doing two years down the road, when he's possibly 100+ pounds.

Get good chew toys, like Kongs. You can fill them with cheesy goodness and it keeps them entertained for at least 10 minutes.

I can see a LITTLE bit of mastiff in the shape of his head, but not much. He'll probably be pretty big, but not XBOX HUEG.

Anyways, he looks like a "Buddy" to me, so naming him that won't hurt. It also sounds like a non-threatening name, which might help.

This. Especially with breeds that have aggressive tendencies like pitbulls socialization at all stages is crucial. Make sure that he/she is exposed to other dogs early and as often as possible. Also positive exposure to a variety of people is highly advisable. Like that guy said too don't just expose them early and slack off. If you give them good sustained exposure to people pitbulls are very reliable, even friendly dogs who can still defend a home effectively.

Yes, what everyone else said. My friend had a purebred pit and she was the SWEETEST dog, so loving, so playful, never hurt a thing in her life and they'd had her since my friend was a baby. They took that dog everywhere with them and lavished her with affection.

They had taken her to a doggie daycare/training place when she was about 6 months old, and she had excellent manners. Not everyone could afford such a place, but if you start training early on and SOCIALIZE you will have an amazing dog.
