My lifestyle is not so active, a lot of time is spent at home, but I've got a big backyard/lots of room.

dogs still need lots of attention, even if you have a large backyard you'll still have to play with it alot for it to have proper exercise(if you leave it back there it'll get destructive).

herding dogs have a pretty high energy level, as do terriers.

I suggest a greayhound. They love to run around once in a while but really adapt to you and your living. They're large dogs, but have short hair and are really wonderful. Plus, they come in many variant colors.
