I've heard rats love "digging boxes".

I can't get them the clean soil shit they need just yet, so is there anything around the house I could use to let them burrow/dig through in a big container?

Would they enjoy walking around in sand? I don't want any of the grains getting caught in their breathign passage or anything, so I don't know.
