>>34466498% of this board lives in a major city and the closest they've ever been to a farm is to see a cute baby cow when their teacher took them to the zoo when they were twelve. The actual reality behind food- both of the meat and plant kind- is something they'll never experience. As far as they're concerned, milk comes from a bottle and and flour comes from a white paper sack. It's easy to make a moral judgement if you're missing so much of the information. It's called detachment from reality.
In reality, something like 98% of an animal carcass in any western factory will be used. Even cute widdle chinchillas will become something after they're been skinned, usually dog food or fertiliser (see 'meat' in the ingredients list of the dog food can). Fertiliser that very likely will be used to produce grains and vegetables.
Hmm.
Frankly, it's pretty hard to be romantic about one's diet when one has raised it oneself. It's eat or die. Simple. And if one is going to eat meat, one has the moral, ethical, and most importantly practical obligation to use as much of the animal as possible.
