I've always wanted one of these since I was a kid and now I own my own house I was going to buy a Puppy.

But as I've started telling everyone I know, the response is pretty much unimous

"Oh hell naw, Anon! They're terrible Dogs, you can never EVER let them off the leash, they HATE everyone but master, very bad with children, vicious / dangerous"

is this all true? what the fuck?

Huskies are extremely high-energy dogs that need about fifty times more work than, say, a Lab or Retriever. You'd need to run this thing for like an hour or two every day. Not walk, RUN. They also like to dig, from the ones I've known, and they can jump/climb most fences if they put their minds to it. You also have to be careful in warm weather areas-- they cannot be shaved so they can't be left outside/taken outside for too long.

Keep in mind it's going to be like having a retarded teenager that bites and you have to try to control it. The worst part is they're so FULL of energy, you have to put them to some kind of work. A lot of people might have them pull sleds or wagons or something just to give them something to do since usually running isn't enough.

If you haven't owned a dog ON YOUR OWN before, especially not a large dog with a lot of energy, you shouldn't get a husky. Start calmer.

Huskies like to dig, it's their nature, so if you keep one indoors a lot, expect some dug up carpet and furniture.....at first. They have TONS of energy, so a lot of playing and attention are required.

They are hairy and tend to shed a lot, so expect that. they are as good as you train them to be.

This is Woof, he's been mine since he was 6 weeks old. He's pretty awesome.

If you train a dog correctly, they're going to act exactly how you want them to act.
They're great and loyal dogs and with proper training and human and dog interaction, they'll be perfectly well behaved.

My husky doesn't exhibit any destructive behavior whatsoever. He doesn't bark at all, won't run away when off a leash, and is generally very calm.

The only peculiar thing is that he doesn't enjoy eating the same food for more than three or four days. He gets sick of eating the same food over and over and will refuse food eventually.

Mine is short and stocky and is generally very calm, but theres one in the village that's the polar opposite. Check out all the dogs available for buying, and let the dog choose you (if it comes up to you for example) and make sure the breeder knows what they're talking about. Can confirm on the digging and the strange food habits, but mine comes when called and will happily sit there whilst kids stroke him. Exercise is an absolute must. In short, when they're tired, they're the best pets in the world, when they're not, they're a total nightmare. Pic related, He's mine :) It's his 2nd birthday today.

Im a firm believer that any type of dog can be trained to have whatever charicteristics you want.. Sure there is different instincual traits in each species but with enough training and a little time they will do what you teach.

Op i also wanted a husky since i was about 6. When i was 10 and finally convinced parents to get a dog, my dad decided german shepard was a better choice without my input.. No complaints my shepard is awesome

Husky owner here, mine is about a year and a half old. he's mild mannered, friendly, calm most of the time. he's great, though he listens when he wants and wouldn't think about letting him off his leash. he's never gotten aggressive with anyone other than play fight, quiet dog, BUT Jesus he sheds, you might want to invest in a nice vacuum cleaner.

all in all great pets, loyal. patience is key, also reward good behaviour OFTEN. they are reward driven dogs.

huskies don't bark, not even when the neighborhood dogs are barking or when a stranger walks by your house (this might be a bad thing). BUT, they do howl VERY loudly, especially when they are puppies and they are going through their 'howling at night' phase.

we kept the puppy in the garage while he was doing this and it worked pretty well (though he did chew up a BUNCH of shit).

the puppy started with a lot of nipping at first but one he hit 1 year of age he stopped.
as far as training goes, he learned most of his tricks when he was a puppy. right now though, its kinda hard to get his attention.

i'm sure shedding would be a problem if you want to keep it inside especially in the summer when they lose most of their fur. i have to comb the shit out of him during this time.

temperate, out of all the dogs i ever met, huskies are the sweetest mother fuckers EVER, they may play rough at first but quickly get over it and plays as rough as you do. my problem though is dog fights, he never fights with dogs but other dogs pick on him because he still has his balls.

also, i take off his leash during walks and he stays around me but not next to me, i'm sure this can be fixed with some training though. they do sometimes get distracted and run after things.

Also had a husly-samoyed mix as a kid. Loved that plump little girl. She would run and run and run and run some more, which was probably her biggest issue, seeing as it ultimately killed her. Hit by a car. =[

Just make sure the pup has lots of room to scamper about far away from traffic...

what kind of life style do you have? cause if you are a lazy fuck, forget about an active breed like a husky. what kind of dog did you want? a dog thatll play fetch with you all day? protective? easy to train? as far as the "dangerous with children" part....i think any dog is dangerous towards children if you dont socialize the shit out if them with children. some dogs love kids, some dogs not as much. just socialize them the best you can.

personally, after much research... all the asian, or nordic breeds suck ass imo. i went with a gsd.

2)It's incredibly friendly, but it is also hyperactive and likes to play rough sometimes. No real danger, though, beyond nipped fingers and hands.

In the same boat as OP, except I already have an energetic as fuck Labrador and an old as fuck Golden Retriever. It's a problem sometimes, because the Golden can't stand exercise for more than a few minutes but he whines and barks if I just leave with the labrador, who's always antsy for a walk. Throw in a husky to the mix and things might get more complicated.

I've never had a dog that can't bet let off leash and seriously can't imagine living with one (and, to be honest, think that every dog can be taught to walk off leash). Most huskies I meet are also off leash (except when I'm in the city, of course) and behave like every other dog.

It really depends on how you raise the dog, but I can say that it's completely possible for them to be well behaving dogs even if people say other wise.

As mentioned before, huskies don't seem to bark at all. They vocalize through howling and moaning instead.
