I recently purchased some fish antibiotics (amoxicillin and ciprofloxacin) since I am too poor to afford any health care or a doctor visit (AMERICA!) and the antibiotics are the only ones that do not require a prescription

I'm not sick right now, but I will not have health care anytime in the near future, and I figured I should just have these in case I need them.
(also I am aware of advised medical dosages/protocols, and increasing antibiotic resistance, so I will not be taking one or two of these occasionally like a tard)

Have any of you guys tried taking pet antibiotics before???
Any experience or knowledge to share with me???

I tried asking on a couple forums I found online, but everyone seemed really crazy (like living-in-underground-bunkers-and-preparing-for-judgement-day type of crazy) I'm just doing this because Im poor, Im not a survivalist or whatever they call themselves

OTC fish antibiotics are probably a mixed-bag of stuff with enough impurities to either negate the benefits, or even cause harm themselves. For example, staphlococcus and streptococcus are both common bacterial infections, but have very different modes of infection and growth, and require very different treatments, and the treatment for one can actually have the opposite effect on the other. So basically, don't do it.

That said, both are basic antibiotics given to humans. Most likely, the dosage would be off to help you at all, and there is a high likelyhood of other "inactive" ingredients that will react weird to you cuz NOT FISH.

I understand that in most developed countries there is decent access to healthcare, but Im uninsured and dirt poor and in the United States, and Im unable to access what severely limited social services are available (since Im not mexican with 16 children)

all that being said, I will also take what you helpful anons have said into account. Thank you for your advice, I have now decided I will only take them in case of a dire emergency

I can tell you one thing that would be helpful to you - if you have a Korean deli nearby, they should sell behind the counter a variety of Korean OTC drugs and ointments that are technically illegal in US and prescription only because Korea's a batshit insane country where you can buy IV from the corner store. They have English labels and ingredients lists, and they are much cheaper and more concentrated than pharmacy only brands.

madecassol/fucidin - ointment for external injuries

Oralmedi - for open sores and cuts inside the mouth

P & M - iodine based external ointment for athelete's feet

There was this other thing that was a corti-steroid cream for general allergy outbreaks and hives, can't remembe the name.

also, I'm aware that most people have a VERY distorted perception of what antibiotics really do. I know that antibiotics are toxic at high enough levels, or if you take them for too long. I know that the side effects of overuse can be deadly or permanently damaging, their overuse can lead to other illnesses (clostridium difficile infections, as one example), that certain antibiotics are only effective against certain bacteria and localities of infection, that antibiotics are contraindicated in certain illnesses or can react with other drugs/substances, that misuse can lead to the development of antibiotic resistant strains, and that most of the time we get sick it is from a virus, which antibiotics do nothing against... etc. etc.

Im not proposing a drug crazed antibiotic-fest, with an antibiotic candy dish next to my bed.

In my case I clearly had a giardia infection a few months ago, which I knew I needed Metronidazole for, but since I have no healthcare I had to check into an ER and then received a $3,000 bill for it a month later

When I have had health insurance I maybe need antibiotics 1-2 times a year (I get sick a lot and have a lot of health problems... weak immune system)

TL;DR I'm curious specifically about using pet medications, not the dangers of antibiotic misuse in general

I had a koi pond in my backyard growing up, but I barely remember anything about when we had to give them meds. Besides that, I have no other experience with fish medications.

There is no way to tell how much a proper dosage you need.

Fish antibiotics are already dissolved and intended to be external applications that are absorbed through skin/gills.

If you take pure antibiotic, what you'll end up with is a stomach ulcer and worse infection than before.

Yes, there might be some unscrupulous Indian/Chinese/Malaysian drug company that manufactures a suplus of human antibiotics, relabel them as fish antibiotics and sell'em off cheap. But you wouldn't know how to figure that out. Plus it's more expensive to do that.

(God damn small under funded country towns.) While I don't think much of OP's suggestion of taking animal antibiotics, I don't think much of you guys either. Treating water greatly reduces the chance of parasites like giardia. 'Greatly reduces' does in no way mean 'completely eliminate'. You can also pick up giardia and co from fruits and vegetables that haven't been washed correctly, or have been washed in contaminated water. If you are on tank water you are almost certainly at risk from faecal contaminants. You can pick up giardia from using a public toilet. You can pick up giardia from using any damn toilet. You can pick up giardia from bloody near anywhere, and as an added bonus the little buggers are almost as difficult to eradicate as water bears. I swear.

OP! I know that your barbaric and bizarre health system makes things difficult, but do try and scrape up the money for the antibiotics. Giardia is an utter bitch, but in my case at least it was cleared out very quickly by something like three tablets in total. When water industry people like myself pick up these things they tend to be more heavy duty than the usual strains of bugs. Mine lasted for three months of misery before I gave in and went for the drugs, but two days after the antibiotics I was cured. It'll be worth the money, trust me.
