Hey /an/, You may remember me and Turtwig from February when I got him at the NARBC in Arlington. Well, he's doing great, despite his dumb name. Hes eating alot (we feed him mixed baby greens and fruit like grapes, kiwis, banana, strawberry, and the rare tomato), I take him outside almost daily, and he moves around quite a bit. My question is, do tortoises like company? My local pet store ordered two russians (after I mentioned them), a male and a female. I was considering one as a friend for Turtwig, but I don't know if tortoises like other tortoises, especially if they're different species. Any advice? Also, were does this "feed them once a week" crap come from? Turtwig wants to eat multiple times a day, and he eats a lot. He also poops and pees a lot. Whats the benefit of not feeding them?

I would have called him shuckle Don't get a Russian, he's a Herman, Russians can be aggressive when it comes to territory and they have 4 nasty claws that could take out his eye. Don't feed him fruit, it can cause bacterial blooms in his stomach as torts can't handle much sugar. Feed him all the time, if he's not hungry he'll stop eating. He's not going to get obese on veg. There solitary animals so they wont get lonely

I started out not feeding him but a rare treat of fruit, but he got to where he wouldn't eat without a bite of grape or strawberry first. That, and my mom keeps coming in and feeding him fruit. I wash everything. I'm more careful about his food than mine. He also keeps trying to eat bird seed and I have to stop him, because I can see that he doesn't digest it.

Just stick to veggies, fruits are ok as a treat but only rarely and in small quantities, if he's hungry enough he'll eat without any fruit, starving disobeys every biological principal what's the weather like there, you might want to bring him inside during winter as he's used to a Mediterranean climate

>>985224 I live in NW Louisiana, but he doesn't live outside. I just take him outside for an hour or three every day its warm enough.
Infact, I often let him run around on my bed and he crawls under my pillow to nap. :)

Grrrr... Why does everything eat cat poop?! I swear, if there is a kitty bomb in the area Turtwig will find it and start eating it. WTF...

I own 6 box turtles. If you keep them together, do not mix genders. I got three different enclosure for the three males. Then one for the three females. DO NOT mix males with females, they WILL mate, and you WILL have a freaking dozen baby turtles. Male/male mix can work, but youll have to watch them to see if they get along, or let them fight and hope they work it out before one of them get hurt, but odds are they will keep fighting. keeping females together is good, low chance of fighting there. But turtles dont need other turtles, they live by themselves in the wild mostly. If you want more then, its more for you then the turtle.

>>985999 Well the russian is almost the full size of my hand and thick while Turtwig is the size of my palm, so I don't guess it'd work...

>>986009 what gender is turtwig?

>>986017 I'm pretty darn sure he's a boy.

What do you mean by "pretty sure"
Have to checked the curve of the shell, or seen his penis pop out when he pees.
its kinda freaky really, you'd know if you seen his penis pop out of his tail.

I was going mostly by tail length. The breeder was pretty sure he was male, too, and if what a female russian looks like is any clue, he's a boy.

>>986033 Okay was just checking, I'd seen to many people guess at a turtles sex.
But whether it be russians or any other breed, I would suggest that you don't get any other turtles for him.

Turtwig was most confused by the sudden photo shoot. but maybe it'll help.

>>986038 I kinda figured so. He doesn't really seem lonely...yet.
And heck, just him can be a handful. He can hide in the house so fast, and he really moves outside hen he wants to.
I just had to get him away from an ant bed... I keep forgetting he's still a baby.

Glad I haven't been using the wrong pronouns. :)

Infact, I often let him run around on my bed and he crawls under my pillow to nap. :) <-------- Are you sure that's a good idea? Don't turtles carry salmonella?????

>>986039 >>986049 Show us the underside, tails are unreliable because to me it looks like a female.

>>986141 Forgot, to mention, if the plastron is slightly indented, it is a boy. If flat, it is a girl.
Anonymous
>>986143 Its indented a little, but I suppose its not meant to be too terribly dramatic.
>>986122 Thats mostly a risk from water turtles, not tortoises. Besides, in all my years of pets, the only thing I got salmonella from was McNuggets...

>>986155 It's male. If it was female it would have no indent at all because females don't need to climb on top of other tortoises to mate.
FYI: The indentation method is much better than using the tail. Some males have really thick tails and some females have pretty thin ones. The only way it would be accurate is if you spent your life around turtles and tortoises which would make you incredibly used to sexing them.
