I need some advice on cats and on rabies.

So basically, I live in a rural spot of town and there are a handful of feral cats. This one feral cat in particular kind of worries me. He (or she) runs up my porch stairs meowing loudly and very fast. Tonight, he tried getting in my house. He began creeping up the stairs and I immediately closed the door (since I had 3 cats freaking out behind my leg).

I am seriously freaked out. Is this a symptom of rabies?

about a month and a half. The first time it happened I was in my back room typing a paper, and then it came to the door crying REALLY fast and REALLY loudly. I first assumed it was one of the feral cats that we occasionally feed. When I approached the door, it darted down the stairs.

Further background info: I went to the front door tonight to let in one of my cats. She was by the door hunched over staring down the steps. When I let her in, the said feral cat began walking up the stairs meowing loudly and really fast. I have two female cats, and one male.

Any idea gents? I appreciate your input, as I am rather stumped and worried.

Could be rabies. It could also have been buried in the Pet Semetary. Either way, I'd call the local animal control and see if they could take care of it.

Yeah, I am afraid to let my pets out at night now.

Sometimes while getting ready to sleep, I can hear it outside making an odd crying sound. It sounds sort of like... moaning... to be perfectly honest.

Is that sound normally associated with cats? Is it like a mating thing?

I actually think he's right. I'm pretty sure the virus kills animals pretty quickly after the first signs. Which just lends more credence to my Pet Sematary idea.

But serious question. Do you have Animal Control where you live? I know I live in the middle of Buttf*ck, Oklahoma and we have Animal Control here. If so, just call them and report the cat. If you think it may belong to someone who lives nearby, talk to them about the cat. If it doesn't, I say either A.C. or (and I hate suggesting it) a .22 should take care of it pretty easily.

Its unlikely to be rabies seeing as its still alive and somewhat healthy

What if its a dumped cat? Just wants some love and food, trying to get inside a house because it used to be a house cat. And heres people going "OMG rabies!" and "shoot it!" lol

No it does not have rabies. Cats will die within a week of showing symptoms, usually 3-4 days. They get really violent then really stupid. They'll attack anything the first day or two, including themselves, then after that they get disoriented, fall over a lot, and walk around with their tongue sticking out. Then they up and die. As a month and a half has passed and the cat has not keeled over, it's not rabies. Honestly it sounds like a pet that was abandoned and has decided yours is the new house it wants or it's a territorial cat who has decided that your cats are intruding and need to be driven out. From how scared your cats are I'm going with territory issues.

OP here, some cocksucker a few years ago did that to this one poor cat. It wandered around our neighborhood for weeks crying. We have been feeding it, but are unable to accept anymore pets into our lives. You may very well be right that it is a dumped cat (since people do that in my neighborhood unfortunately), but even for a dumped cat, wouldn't it be, i dont know, sort of afraid of people? I'm rather worried it is a dumped cat trying to get a new home. As I mentioned, people are real fucking assholes and drop their pet off in my neighborhood for some reason (I'm guessing since it is in the hills where it can catch mice?) Still, the way it acts slightly concerns me.

Also a dumped house cat would probably not be afraid of people seeing as it associates people with food, shelter and affection. Try just sitting down and seeing if it comes to you, most likely its just lonely and hungry.

I'm going to rule out the mating female cat, just because in the past, my largest cat (male) has came very close to fighting the feral/dumped cat.

What should I do? I ABSOLUTELY cannot take in another pet, and I am trying to ween myself off from feeding anymore feral cats.

Would the pound put the cat to sleep? I feel sorry for it now ;_;

Shelters are usually overrun with cats so they get put down pretty quickly, you have to ask yourself if that is worse than it living its life as a feral. Maybe try putting up found cat signs a few blocks away, ads on craigslist and pennysaver, it'll eat up a few hours of your life but you could reunite someone with their best friend and get that warm feeling that comes with trying to save a life.

Feral cats are a nuisance an it seems that so many people just want to play the same tired "Oh but they're cats, have a heart!" line with them. All the while they breed out of control and kill local small animals that belong out of their food chain, and scent mark everywhere, and cause annoyances with their irritating caterwauling. They can also cause injuries and spread diseases to other animals. Mainly YOUR OWN PETS.

You could also call animal control, but...they'd probably just end up putting the cat down, and its wasteful and expensive, as well as a waste of their time. Same with taking it to the pound.

You could try a no kill shelter if you really care that much. Although all that does is burden them further and cause them additional expenses, and the cat might not adjust or it might run off.

I would also suggest a Subsonic hollowpoint .22lr round to the head. Quick, and no one will know you've done it, especially if you get rid of the corpse afterward. Although, I'm not sure I'm quite that heartless. But if there is not any other way, how else would you dispose of it?
