My family just got a dog and I don't want them to train them wrong, so I'm looking for the best ways to raise him. Any solid guides out there?

I've been looking, but I'm a little skeptical on some I've seen. Some say that when he whines, you should not attend them? Just wondering, but isn't that teaching them that he's alone and we won't care for him?
