They will bite and scratch in a play fight, they'll stalk you and pounce on your ankles, and if you piss them off they'll take a swipe at you with their claws. Now take that 10 pound cat and make it into a 200+ pound cat with giant fangs and claws designed to take down animals bigger than you. Whether it's in play, anger, or an actual hunting behavior, at some point you will very likely be injured, to assume otherwise would be irresponsible. If you're fine with that, then take the steps towards getting a cougar, but don't act surprised if something goes wrong.
