Of course, part of that was because /b/ was the home of too goddamned many trip/name fags, and most of the DoD05 crew were the most egregious attention whores from the old IRC channel.

I am sad, but I was spending my time in other corners of the internet.

I wonder if 4chan would've been for me. I didn't start coming here regularly until early 2012, but I spent time on other forums for years and they posted similar stuff.

Not to say terrible stuff didn't happen to "careless" posters (cracky was and AFAIK is still stalked years later and she only posted one picture)... /b/ certainly earned its reputation.

And yet... it was a kinder, gentler, Internet hate machine back then. It was a smaller community (and one with many name/tripfags, at that) that moved slower, had more time for long/thought-out posts or witty replies and shoops.

/b/'s "decline" in quality is simply because there are too many users and the board moves too fast. More than in the past, it's increasingly optimized for reposts than original content.

But it's also better geared for the evolutionary pressure that kills off weaker content... There are pros and cons to current-era /b/, but the one thing to keep in mind is it'll never magically revert to the way it once was.

We can, however, try to make the kinds of threads/content we want to see on /b/ instead of just bitching about everybody else's content. This isn't easy, but nothing worth doing ever was.
