I'm a gaming collector, and I hear stories about people finding games and other valuable items in game stop dumpsters. I fucking hate gamestop but am not poor enough to do this. Ebay/thrift stores is as low as I will go.

i go in the middle of the day, on a random day, and try to vary time and days, so i'm not easily tracked, always park close enough to get in and out of there quick, but far enough away to avoid attention. get a ice cream bucket and fill it with canvas bags and plastic bags, then use those to carry out my haul.

you'll find
food in containers, breads, bags of chips, fruits, vegetables, meats (risky business, so prepare to cook and freeze it), food platters, cakes

I go to a variety of places as laid out in a previous post.

I usually go out around 11:30 so that stores that do close will have just put out their extra food.

I have found lots of cool stuff but I rarely take any home with me since I am on my bike. I have however gotten a couple of signs.

Op here with tips:
First, have an escape plan. I have been almost caught multiple times.
Second, bring a COLOR FILTERED flashlight, red preferrably.
Third, depending on where you go bring stuff will help you get your salvage back easily. For food I just go on my bike with a book bag and a bunch of grocery bags. If I feel like getting larger stuff I drive and bring gloves.
Fourth, wear dark clothes and sturdy shoes.

grocery stores, it depends. generally the oroduce section throws out packs or whole flats when somethinjg starts to go bad on the edge. they also throw out whole sets of things on a sell by date. that shit is good normally for a day or two. the other good thing is you can take home as much as you can carry, and compost anything bad. its a great way to fertilize a yard.

There is a funny thing about trespassing actually. And believe me, I have done plenty of it (Gilman, CO). Trespassing is broken down into two types: Civil and Criminal. Civil trespassing is going onto property regardless if a sign is posted or not. The worst that can happen here is they ask you to leave - if you do not comply, then they can call the police and press charges. chick fil a, burger king, mcdonalds, they all make salads and cold wraps they keep for the day and then toss. subway tosses a bag of fresh breads. it really depends, but you can get some nice packs to take to work as lunch the next day. really i'd rather do grocery stores though.

also, thanks for the compliment bro. I learned stewing, picking, canning, dehydrating, fermenting, and freezing/freeze-drying for my dumpster dives. i also grew a handful of seeds from dumpster veggies.

I'd love it if i lived just far enough out to use the extra tossouts as a lure to get game into my backyard. then i could just backyard hunt some game to have on the side. how badass would that be?

I could return them for cash and for $1 buy a four pack of bubblicious gum that I could sell for $1 per pack during school. And also married guys would buy the latest porno mags (late 90's) and throw them away basically only used once, and the latest issues. Those had a high resale value amongst 12 year old boys...

i always stay away from meat. it's too much of a risk for me. but bread and vegetables are awesome because they're so easy to check. if the vegetables are the same quality as you would buy from the supermarket, they are good. if the bread is not moldy and the bag does not have any large or apparent holes, it is good. lot of places have those huge compactors in the back, the ones that smell worse then the regular dumpsters. that's where all the meat goes, and usually vegetables. alot of places are starting to put those in, which is a shame, since all that fucking food is being wasted. pasta is almost always good if you come across it. if you go around pet stores, you might find a few bags of animal food that just got a hole in it so they threw it away. bent cans that just end up getting thrown away are almost always good if the can is not punctured, whether it is food for animals or humans.

expiration date is always the key on those sorts of things. sell by dates and expiration dates are 2 completely different things. sell by date is when the store has to sell it, but after that date they must throw it away. food is still good up to 1-2 weeks refrigerated, if stored properly, and frozen food is still good 3-4 months, if stored properly. expiration dates, on the other hand, most commonly found on canned foods, is when it must be thrown out. after this date, the structure of the can might fail, which means it won't blow up on you, but it will become weak and might allow air inside, which causes bacteria, and you don't want that.

A lot of people who dive do it for fun, not because they have no other alternative. There is a certain satisfaction from feeling like you are part of the solution rather than part of the problem. I make a lot of money from my programming job but I still dive. If for nothing else than the reaction it gets from all'yall cootie-fearing, ambercrombie-wearing fools.

It does not run Windows 7 comfortably but good enough for XP Pro after I upgraded the HDD and CPU and put in 1GB RAM.

Haven't done it since the last time i did it (around 09) I stepped on a bag full of boards with jagged nails in every direction, I scratched up myself a bunch and had a huge fear it was actually a bag of junky needles and I now had Hep C or HIV, haven't done it since but I got some nice chairs one time too.

All my neighbor threw out about $25 a month worth of empty alcohol bottles and can (combined) however it was really hard getting in and out when theres hardly nothing else in there to step on.

Also not worth getting Aids from another junky needles full trashbag.. so i quit while I was ahead

if i ever encounter a locked dumpster, i just move on. you can score 3 more dumpsters in the time it takes you to open that one and find out there's fuck all inside.

Don't matter if they're a little funky to eat, can sometimes even add unique and flavorful yeasts to the batch. Just know what you're doing with fermentation and it's simply a matter of juicing and bottling the apples. 1 or 2 oranges per 50 apples in the batch gives a nice flavor fyi.

Garbage is commercial property. What you get for free is stuff that you did not purchase, and the business and the law therefore have an interest in making sure that garbage is not owner-less. It is the same reason that a record company will claim "losses" on pirated music that you weren't going to buy in the first place. It doesn't really make any sense, but many laws do not. Deal with it.

I go out with my old VW van every few nights and just see what's out and about for trash day. I live in a college town, which is a goldmine when school gets out. I either use or sell furniture I find. My high school separated cans from cardboard an other recyclables, so right before trash day me and my friend would go to the school and just take pounds of cans from the dumpster. Made probably around $50-75 each every week.

Dumpster diving was my old favorite pasttime.

Never did it for food though.

Electronics and appliances was what me and my dad were after. It was a ritual for us.

Garbage pickup (Cans and dumpsters) was on wensdays, so we'd check dumpsters saterday nights, and tuesday afternoons. We'd do a drivearound the town on tuesday nights checking peoples put out garbage. (We never searched through the cans, just a drive around to see if they set any large peices out next to the can.)

Christmas was always a good week. We'd search the dumpsters, daily, from the 25th till jan 1. We always found good stuff.

Craploads of electronics we got. Most were broken, and disassembled for parts and scrap. (We'd unsolder any valuable circuits, then just rip off the copper/aluminum, and use the remains of the boards to start a fire, so we could burn off the plasic coating on some of the copper) The stuff that could be fixed was fixed, and either sold, given to a friend, or donated to goodwill/salvation army. The stuff that was in working order when we got it was kept for our use, sold/given to friends, or pawned.

I would like to interject here.
I for one was brought up in eastern Europe. My parents both died when i was 3 during the Bosnian-Serb war (we lived on the border). I was put in an orphanage along side what was like 300 other war orphans. Since the orphanage wasn't ever built to equip so many children + the shortages of war reduced the food supply to one meal a day.
Now as i grew up you'd notice that some 'smarter' kids were more plump then the ones you'd consider 'dumb'. Now what was going on was some of the older kids (13 years old) knew what stores/restaurant/hotels etc. threw out fresh food that was considered a waste. Since i got along with them i used to tag along and help them out. In return i got to eat shit i could never imagine existed before like: cookies, sweetened condensed milk, cereals, hard candy, salted peanuts etc. Now as time went by we got better at this. Eventually when people noticed "the orphans stealing food" they would just leave out the edible stuff so that we didn't have to dive and get it. We used to sneak that food back into the orphanage and give it to kids who couldn't come with us (blind, crippled, handicapped, retarded etc). We could all be punished with beatings and shit if we would get caught (and sometimes we did), but one of the reasons I used to risk it was because i gave this little PTSD girl cake on her birthday (didn't know it was her birthday tho), she couldn't speak, and she ALWAYS avoided eye contact. Because of this she rarely got salvaged food. But on that day i gave her some cake, and she just took it and cried like a motherfucker. She ate the thing clean! And kept the plate under her bed for as long as i knew her. The fact that i could make her so happy just by going out and giving her stuff people threw away blew my mind.

Near where I live a hardware store was closing, its like a place for workmen to buy jackets and boots, and they tossed out an Oakley metal display case (would not fit in my car), some new jackets, and boxes of boots.

I took as much as I could home, waited a while and sold it online...

But its bad to get caught, they store claims this as a loss, or gets a credit from the company so its supposed to be destroyed.

Fast forward to today. I live in the U.S since 2008. I inherited my great-uncles waste disposal company which i run. You could say im well off now (much better of then when i was a kid) but i still eat only food people discard and the money i would spend on food goes to the orphanage in which i grew up.

On top of this, whenever the tv repair shops had to get rid of their junk, we got the call. Suprisingly, a lot of the stuff we got worked fine. The person didn't want to pay for the repairs, so the repair place kept the tv. They try selling it, and if they don't, it gets put with the stuff that we pick up. I especially loved these trips, so much interesting crap. A few times we got some of the older repair tools (And I mean old. some of the crap we got looked to be from the 80's.). Couple of times, we got huge boxes full of the repair diagrams that they used to use, and then another time we got a box full of microfliche film (Basically, these were small peices of plastic that had the repair diagrams printed on. Place on a projector, boom. Instant diagram.) I loved those, but my dad always burned them. (Asshole. I'd never use them for anything, but I loved the paper diagrams.)

A local game store in my town threw out all their old Xbox (original) consoles, games, and equipment. Brought a few large garbage bags and brought home as much as I could fit. Most of it was broken, but I managed to fix up two of them from the parts, and they play all the games (32 different ones, at least 50 total though).

My other goldmine was when I checked a gas station dumpster and found a few crates of Mountain Dew, Pepsi, and a box of Snickers. All of it was expired, but it was the middle of winter so it was all cold. Snickers kept for about two more days before it started getting too stale, but the Dew I just finished last month (it lasted about 3 months).

Just go check a dumpster sometime. You will be amazed at what you find sometimes. Also fun to go to junkyards.

I can't believe so many people are astounded by this lol

Can't list everything, but here are the larger pickups we had. All of these are for a single 'load' (Although, sometimes it took us a lot of trips to get everything.)

For Food.. get an Armyfag to get you on Hunter, then to drive you home.

For Booze, Go to the Wormhole after closing, you can find half empty bottles of everything. If you get there right AT closing, and are sober, the manager often will offer you 20-30 bucks to sweep up, and he watches porn on his phone behind the bar. He'll let you walk off with whatever is in an open bottle from the tables.

Used to have a Food Lion in between my college and my house out in the woods. Every day after school I'd dive, well, really just "reach in", and get a grip of apples, bananas, broccoli, packaged salads, unbelievable amounts of packaged food. Never paid for food for over two years. Over two years. Not one dime spent on food, and I ate like a KING. I gave away so much food, bagels, milk, especially chocolate milk for some reason - the Horizon Organic ones, fuck jesus christ there was so much good stuff.

Protip. Bring tools. Dryers are not worth hauling back, but pull the backpanel of them off and flip it over. Odd's are, money will appear. Favorite childhood memory from this. My and my dad were disassembling one, and he said I could have all the money inside it (Usually, as I said, only a couple dollars.) and me hit jackpot. Took a good 5 minutes worth of shaking the machine to get everything out, but I ended up with just under $50 dollars. I was 10 at the time, and to a 10 year old (Back in my day, 10 years ago) finding $50 was as good as sex is to a 16 year old.

Anyway, back to junkyards. We had a small junkyard in our town. We checked it every couple of weeks. Picked up a couple tv's per week, checked the new dryers, and grabbed the occasional chuck of scrap aluminum siding. Never had a extremely big break, but then again we never checked it that much. We proably should have though.

There have been quite a few quite positive articles about dumpster diving/divers in some of the bigger news publications during recent years.

Oh, also, some guards here will tell you it's "minor theft" and that "when the goods are put in the bin, it's the waste recycling company's property", but they know they're wrong, so if you just argue with them for ten seconds they'll get off your back.

Although in Turku (many call it the anus of Finland, personally I have no idea why), the police at one point started to hang out at random dumpster diver paradises and collecting the names and addresses of the divers. When this became public, a magazine interviewed the police doing this, and it turns out it's just so they have a reference sheet for would-be-thieves if something goes missing from the stores or what not.

... Basically, they got paid for hanging out at dumpster sites and harassing kids who dive, so why not? :D I think that was a few years ago, though... I don't think the police would waste their scarce resources to do it once it became public knowledge that they had already.
