Everyone has different opinions on what weight you should use for what amount of butter. I would say an eighth to a quarter for this recipe would be appropriate. You should, even more than if you were making mere cookies, adhere to the unsalted sweet cream butter rule.

You wanna cook it for a while, too. You aren't "cooking" the weed, however, you are simply trying to coax the little weedlets into releasing their aromatic feel-good juices. If you wanted to get really technical, you could use a candy thermometer and look up the heat range. Erowid probably has that info.
Strain the butter through some cheesecloth before using it in any recipe. If you really don't want to throw the physical weed away, fuck it, spread it on some crackers. Its use here is done.
Stow that melted butter in the fridge until it has firmed up somewhat. After a couple of times of making cookies you will figure out exactly how firm the butter needs to be for optimal creaming.
