As a child they are typically told time and time again they are special, extremely bright, a quick learner, creative, etc, by their parents and often teachers (they do this to motivate you although it typically backfires as we often see).
I thought myself Newton incarnate when I was young from hearing this so much and naturally doing extremely well in math compared to the other students at my school. Then I went to a decent college, and took upper level courses and after seeing some of those students and a few of the professors just instantly get concepts I struggle with for hours. I realized I was hardly above average compared to them.
Partly biggest fish in the pond syndrome I suppose.
