I just finished reading Monstrous Regiment for the second time, and am eagerly awaiting a paperback release of Going Postal. I'm cheap, sue me.

I love the way Pratchett writes. Some of the Discworld analogies he creates are so hilariously apt. He gets bonus points for being literate enough in internet and video game culture to make fun of them properly and subtly.

Also: Guards > Death > Wizards > Witches. Discuss.

Spoilery-goodness aside... Yes! I love Pratchett's Disworld series. It's mostly good fun and it does have a good knack for parody-ing similar situations in real life.

Btw he co-authored a book with Neil Gaiman (of Sandman fame) titled "Good Omens". While the plot smacks of Gaiman, the actual writing is most definately Pratchett, which makes it an enjoyable read.

For me, Death edges out Guards by a hair. Vimes is a great character, but I just like how metaphysical Death stories can become. It might also be tied to the fact that I enjoyed Thief of Time so much, it tied with Small Gods as my favorite of the Discworld series. And, yes, Good Omens was a lot of fun to read. And though I do like Thief of Time's depiction of similar characters better, Crowley is really cool.

It doesn't really matter where you start. Very little of the plot or jokes rely on previous understanding of the universe. And if they do, Terry explains it well enough at the time.

Good omen is awesome and brought me to read Gaimans "american gods" which is also very good

Of all the continueing arcs, I like the Guards the best and Rincewind the least, though my absolute favorite Discworld book would be the standalone "Pyramids". I would start reading either with a one-shot or Guards Guards. I would not start with Color of Magic, because:

a. It's a boring arc, and
b. It's his first book and not that good

I have to admit being vaguely unsatisfied with Thud!. It was a great concept, but the book was probably half the length it should have been. The whole possession thing was dealt with much better in A Hat Full of Sky.

i really liked the colour of magic and a light fantastic and read them back to back but i find a really difficult time getting into equal rites

it feels like he ditched the structure of the first two and pushed far too many things together

i hope the rest of his books arent the same way
